Hi TT - i recently took a trip to Myrtle beach for some winter golf and to escape the snowfall in MA. I use a soft case for the clubs since its easier to maneuver, and also use a "stiff arm" club protector. Used it several times in the past with no issues, however much to my dismay, there is a decent size dent on the Top of my 917 driver. Two questions:

    1) Will this affect the club for use in any way as I know how highly these are engineered - and - 2) Any recommendations for hard cases?

Is there any way to replace justa club head? The custom shaft is still good.

    thanks all, and Happy Holidays.

my biggest fear when traveling... With the woods I have, I always take them off and pack them in my back pack that way nothing will happen to them... I leave the shafts in the travel bag.. Sorry to hear that...

I don't think the damage on top of the driver will do any harm as much as the face but that's my guess..

I started with a Plano plastic case but the airlines broke the latches around the 4th or 5th trip. I switched to Club Glove soft and really like it, no problems so far. I picked up the tip that Speedy is talking about on this forum, to remove the heads. I also wrap my golf towel around the irons. If changing to a hard case, the best are the SKB models. A little pricey but made to last.

My problem with hard cases is they never fit inside of anything smaller than a Suburban from airport. I have the Titleist Club Glove with the stiff arm. The padding around the top seems generous. No problems to date. Has anyone else had an issue with this product?
I did have a hard top shell and it folded nicely inside of itself, but the material was not nearly as indestructible as the Club Glove. Zipper broke and the canvas generated tears over not a great deal of travel. The other choice is to use a commercial shipper - Ship Sticks being the catchy name for one of them.
  5. Removing the heads is a great idea. At one time, I worked as a baggage handler. Being a golfer, I tried to take extra care of golf clubs. Problem is, not all baggage handlers are golfers!

I switched to a Club Glove travel bag about 6 years ago and have had no issues to date. The bag and my clubs have survived over 20 trips.

Speedy thanks for the idea about removing the heads. I will try on my next trip.

thanks all - love the idea about removing the heads. The dent is right on the toe on the titleist logo...Agree SKB is the best, will be looking into getting one.

@Titleist, any chance to purchase a new head? Any ideas?

I've dented heads at tight heated driving range booths (LH and RH have to time their swings when next to each other) with no loss of performance. However, the resale value does hit zero. Best option is to donate to First Tee.

Ahhh, sorry to hear, that really sucks... I have the Club Glove soft travel bag and never had an issue. I will say, I try to only pack a carry on and if there is any spill over of clothes, they go directly to the top of my travel bag surrounding the clubs as best as possible. Just a little extra protection and extra luggage basically. Removing the heads is probably the best advice though.

Sorry about your misfortune, Justin. I swear by my SBK hardcase, not at it. It has been all over the world and never a problem or worry. I completely trust it. I always take a lightweight Titleist carry bag so that my weight stays under 50 lbs so my case is not too large with two pairs of shoes, balls and rain suit. Also, if I happen to play a walking course, the caddy is rather happy with my set-up. It is well padded plus I throw a towel in between the clubs for added protection.

I have to say taking heads off woods is genius. I never heard of that one. I have heard that you should put irons in upside down in the bag. This way your golf bag bottom protects them.

I like that one Rooster about turning the irons upside down.. Interesting... One other thing that someone told me is to take the rain cover and put it on. Filled it up with towels, bubble wrap or whatever you can find and stuff it so basically nothing moves around and then zip it up..

I do ANYTHING to protect my clubs.. Yeah it's extra time but at least my clubs are well protected...

thanks all - appreciate all of the suggestions...luckily i cant see the dent at setup...so i cant blame it for bad swings ;)

I have a set of iron covers that stay in my Club Glove 'Last Bag' shoe pockets when not in use. The ones png uses in shipping are great for this purpose. In my travels, I usually wrap a towel around the irons, but it seems like TSA always inspects my bag as it is never packed the same way when it gets to the destination.

I like the idea of removing the heads from the metals, but they still need protection somewhere/somehow. This may be wishful thinking, but getting to the baggage claim before the bags arrive seems key. I caught my bag coming down a steep ramp, heads-first, before they impacted on the guard rails! Not all airports have flat baggage claim rotisseries.

Sorry to hear about the damage, I have been using an older Titleist soft case for years and recently I purchased an extra long bed pillow which I wrap around the head area inside the case, doesn't add that much weight.

Removing the heads is a good idea, need to try that one.

Merry Christmas all and have a great 2018

I took the head off my new 917 going to Myrtle in November. I go the lost and found at the Club the week before and grab the crappiest headcovers I can find to put on the rest of my woods, and I also turn my Scotty upside down and pull the headcover down over the grip too, to try to hide if from the less than honest baggage handlers that might find their way to my bag.

I like taking the heads off and put them in my carry on!
  18. If you have a custom shaft, it didn't come from a big box store I'm assuming. Go back to the club and I'm pretty sure you can just order the head.
Driver use: shouldn't affect performance, mainly cosmetic and noise might be out of tune a touch.
I'm another believer in removing wood heads and carrying them on.

Thanks for all of the great advice everyone. Happy new year and here’s to more fairways, one putts and best scores yet. Cheers!

Apparently you can’t order just a head unfortunately.

I have a Club Glove Last Bag with a Stiff-Arm and have not had any issues. As extra precaution I always take the head off my driver and 3 wood and place in the bag as well as turn put iron covers on all my irons. Better safe than sorry I say.
