AP3 club face wear

    I’ve had my 718 AP3’s since late October and have only been able to use them at the range 2 times. I’ve noticed excessive club face wear on all of the irons, most notably on the PW and 48 degree wedge. I do not hitboff of mats and wipe off range balls before hitting. Does this wear appear excessive to anybody else? I’m being told it is normal wear and that the marks will wipe off (already cleaned them). Yes I know, many shots off of the toe ;)

    Looks normal. You will actually get more "turf marks" on grass with sand base than you would off of the mats. These thin lines are where sand just under the grass is being pinched between the ball and the club face. Very normal. I never worry about betting against a guy who's bag is filled with shinny clubs. Beware of the guy with worn clubs dotted with lead tape. He will take your money every time.

    Thanks, Dale...appreciate the response. Your wagering advice is duly noted: I spent enough on the clubs anyway...not much left to gamble with ;)

    I thought the marks seemed excessive after only two range sessions and was worried about the effects the marks will have on the grooves.

    I've never noticed the base to be excessively sandy...especially being up here in the Pacific NW. It's apparently more sandy than I thought...

    The greater the loft, the more turf gets between the ball and the face. That's why you are seeing it more on the short irons. Also, I know you acknowledged the toe hits. Some of that might be swing and some might be too flat of a lie. Did you do a fitting? If not, try to catch a free Titleist Thursday and hit some of theirs with 2 degrees upright. Might make a difference. Titleist can bend 2 degrees for a nominal fee and they will stay under warranty.

    I was fit for 1/2" long, 1 degree upright, which my clubs are. I'm pretty tall (6'3"), so the toe shots are undoubtedly my flawed, inconsistent swing.

    Glad to hear you were fitted. Don't beat yourself up too much, very few folks wear out a sweet spot unless they are tour caliber players. Have fun, hit it, find it, hit it again! That's what its all about.

    I practice very carefully at the range. It doesn't take much sand on a ball to scuff the face. If you've ever seen a good players old blades with some face wear, most that is sand from range balls. Take a bucket of fresh washed range balls, still wet, dump them out, you gotta wash the sand off the ball. Doesn't seem like much, but hit 1000 balls , your new irons look like old irons.......

    Range balls can be tough on clubs, all depending on the range and type of ball. Most do not use premium balls and are harder.

    I’ve had my AP3’s since last November. That wear looks normal to me. After a year I still think they look great. I do try to take care of them as they were really expensive, but I agree that they will wear and its normal. Make sure you spend time enjoying how they feel as much as how good they look.

    My AP3s look about the same after a season, and "better" than my previous AP1s (only because I'm not hitting off the toe anymore).

    Totally normal wear, nothing looks out of place there. Just the sign of use, which is good!

    I have the same problem w my AP3 blacks

    P and 9 Iron showing wear

    only used them a few rounds and the range

    It's kind of annoying, especially for black irons
