I've done that with a hybrid out of the rough. Certainly can't blame that one on Titleist. Sorry, that's a steep angle toe miss. Be grateful they're co-operating. You'd be amazed what a King Sharpie will do, even cleaning up the face on fairway woods while leaving the white ink in the grooves.

Having had my TSR for 2 years now, I tend to use the entire face so as to not wear out the sweet spot. I have skyed more drives than I’d like to admit. At least I’m consistent doing so at the top center. Aside from some small scratches there, there is nothing like chip marks in the picture. When using the toe I tend to hit low on the face, so almost never near the crown.

I’d have to blame me more than the driver for those type of chippings.

You can actually see the dimple marks in this picture all the way up the face to the edge of the paint. Hitting balls on that edge will cause the metal to flex and the paint will chip.

My new TSR2 has the exact same issue pictured. The paint started chipping immediately where the crown meets the face. I brought it back to PGA Superstore where I bought it, and they are contacting Titleist. All of my local big box stores are selling their demo TSRs in the pre-owned section. Most have evidence of ample mishits on the crown, but none exhibit similar chipping.

The same thing happened to my club after the first round. I thought it was something I did. After looking at yours I'm not so sure. I also bought it at gilf galaxy.

Update: Received a new replacement head from Titleist. Covered under the warranty. The Warranty representative from Titleist was excellent and very helpful. Now, just need for the weather to get better so I can go play.

Thanks for the response. One of the many praises I can heap on my club is they are really good about washing and drying range balls. Plus, since these were my first strikes with the club, I picked out 5 dry, clean, balls. I did not sky any of the shots that day and the worse shot (which I presume was the toe shot) still went straight. Again, good advice.

With range balls that sometimes get washed and then, while wet, can have grains of sand or dirt stuck to them...always make sure the ball is clean. I have seen players hit the face of a TSR2 with 50% of the ball...practically a cold sky ball....never a paint chip or gash.

The PGA certified fitter at Golf Galaxy that did my fitting felt strongly this is not normal wear and tear. He showed me the head of the TSR2 he uses for fitting and there is not a single chip in the paint on the edges of the face. He said he absolutely knows people have hit that club on the edges multiple times. Granted, they use PROV1s for fittings and not range balls, but for $600, I expect to be able to hit this club confidently without concern that an edge strike is going to cause this much chipping.

I dropped a club head when I was adjusting it for the first time on the golf course and it had a pretty big scratch from the cart path (this was obviously my fault). I sent it to a club refurb outfit and they were able to get it looking like new.

I would take it back to Golf Galaxy with your receipt set up a an exchange or return.

Range balls can be harder than balls we normally play with and from the ball marks on the toe of the driver it appears there were a few off center hits in the area where the chips are. But let Titleist be the judge of that.

Sorry dude, the dimple marks do not show such a good hit. Looks like at least two off on the toe so if the ball hits right on the paint seam, this will likely happen. Show it to your retailer and see what they might do but no club manufacturer should be responsible for damage along the seams from toe hits or sky marks.

UPDATE: Golf Galaxy is sending it to Titleist. They feel this not normal wear and tear and agree it is defective.

Did you crown the driver? The ball strike pattern on the driver face shows low center strikes with strikes high towards the heel.

I don't think Titleist will cover this under warranty. you might be better off filling in the areas that lost the paint with a black Sharpie.

Looks like a ball strike toe hit. Some range balls are brutal to the paint finish. You can contact Titleist for assistance, but keep in mind they can only do so much. That's why the face of clubs is never painted.
