    i would get a lesson
  3. Are you doing it for all of your irons or just certain ones?

If its your long irons, 4 and 5, then spend some time working on those specifically at the range. If it's all of them then absolutely look at lessons
  4. It’s inconsistent on every club. I am a self taught golfer but I struggle on consistency a lot.

Serious answer: as fellow TT members have suggested, consult a competent PGA professional for swing advice. Short of that, maybe someone who knows the golf swing could help. Remember that 'free advice' is worth exactly what you paid for it, though.

Humerous answer: Golfer dashes off to see his doctor, an orthopedist. "Doctor, doctor, I need surgery immediately!" "Why, what happened? What is wrong?" "I need you to shorten my legs by an inch and a half!!" "That sounds pretty serious? Why do you want that kind of surgery?" "It's because I keep topping all my golf shots!"

Right you are Tom. See a professional or at least someone who knows the golf swing
  7. My wife was having that problem, she was rising up through her swing so I'd say try to stay down, keep your head in relatively the same position from backswing through impact and don't try to look at the ball after you hit it

Same problem here until I realized that the golf swing is horizontal (backward and forward), not vertical (up and down).

    : )
  9. Got to love Thomas’s answer. If you need help with the swing go see a PGA professional. They are in the best position to help..
  10. Will custom fitted clubs make a difference? I’m 6’4 and so far I’ve only gotten extensions but never a real fitting.

Yes. Go to a fitting. Height is only one consideration. Just because you're tall doesn't mean you need longer clubs. I'm a bit tall so the fitter had me try 1/2" longer, but with long arms we went with standard length and 2 degrees flat. The bonus is I don't have to bend over as much to pick up my ball.
  12. I would try a drill where you keep your shoulders on plan until impact. I’m a swing coach and most of my students have a tendency to raise there trail shoulder or drop it.
  13. If you have the extra bucks a couple few lessons from a pro could definitely help you out. If you’re looking to figure it out yourself there are tons of great YouTube videos on proper iron striking. Also take your cell phone and record your swing straight on and in line, compare your swing at different moments to some of the pros you follow, and compare what’s different. For sure, getting solid compression with irons is key. Topping irons could be caused by multiple different things but you won’t hit a solid iron shot without good compression at impact

Like the majority, I would suggest a lesson. I spent years doing the same thing, topping the ball more often than not and if I wasn’t topping, heavy chunks. Lessons changed my game and is worth the money compared to spending it on green fees getting frustrated. My issue was squatting during my follow through thinking I was transferring my weight to my lead side correctly then I was popping up and extending way too early. .

100% a lesson is the only way to go about this.

They will break your swing down and show you where the issue lies. It could be anything from standing up during your swing to having the ball too far forward in your stance.

In the short term, maybe try moving the ball back a fraction at set up. Literally moving it back a ball, I do this occasionally if i’m striking it a little thin on a particular day

At 6'6" I've been fitted a number of times.
Unfortunately, there is no "standard" in fitting, so you may get different recommendations from different fitters. I have...
Now I play 1" long, 2 degrees upright in my irons. Standard length and lie for my woods.
