Already going to the UK and my wife threw in a night in St. Andrews. This was last minute, so I’ll be trying to get on as a single. Anyone have experience waiting for an opening? If the Old Course is not an option, would your second choice be the New Course? Any recommendations for a third option?

The New and the Jubilee are both fantastic options. From what I understand, you need to show up pretty early to wait in the queue to try and walk on the Old Course. I had the luxury of having a tee time when I visited a few years back. Played the Old, the New and the Jubilee and enjoyed them all.

Same as Tyler, liked the New and Jubilee a lot. You can also play Castle Course or Kingsbarns which are just the other side of town. Might need a taxi or hotel shuttle to get you over to them. October and April are the best month's to get onto the Old Course. November starts the winter season where you are required to carry a mat and hit off it. You don't want to do that.

Dale/Tyler - thanks for the tips. I'm leaving this weekend and will be standing around the Starter's booth on Thursday and/or Friday. I am also in the 2 day lottery (the Old Course Hotel matches guests for lottery purposes). My wife will be looking for leather bond books in town. At least if I can get a photo off of the stone bridge that will be a memory. I really hadn't put St. Andrew's high on my bucket list - but the trip planner/wife of 20 years added it on her own. I originally only planned on staying in England, flying through Heathrow. Of course that also changed my plans on originally not taking clubs and renting Titleist sets at a Marriott resort. Hopefully September 27th is close enough to October.

Get up early (5 AM at the latest!) and check in with the starter. Tell him you are a single and looking for an opening. It may take a few hours but you will get out. Take a local caddie!

Got to play the Old and New courses. Great experience. The Dunhill is next weekend, so I got on both courses quickly. I have the requisite picture ont Stone Bridge but I also have a unique souvenir. On the first hole without any warmup my 3rd shot was a pitch across the burn. Hit it thin into the rock face. Attached is a new Pro-V1 with a piece of the rock embedded above the Titleist logo. Attached.

Great to hear that you were able to get on the Old Course. That whole town is pretty special. Enjoy the new memories!
