I have been having trouble hitting fairway woods of the deck and I'm wondering if anybody has a tip for me.

    Thanks

I guess most common is you don't have a slight descending blow, but your post gives no indication of the problems you are having.

I saw this on The Golf Fix.  Place a tee in front of the ball.  As you go to hit the ball focus mainly on hitting the tee instead of the golf ball.  For me this worked realy well, but for my playing partner it didn't.  Hope this helps!

A real quick tip that has helped me over my career has been to grip down slightly on the club.  Provides a little extra control and I find it easier to hit it a bit more solid.  Worth a shot!

Last thought - when I got back into playing golf in 2006, I found out that I fared better with an 18-21* fairway wood vs a hybrid. My winning combo has been a 19-21 fww and 25-28H since then.  I've pretty much tossed the 3 wood (I can launch one but either balloon it or slice it; I can knock the daylights out of a 5 wood so there is no benefit to a 3W).  I carry a lofted driver, 5 wood and 27H for the long game and do quite well with it.   The driver is 44.5" and the 5 wood is 41.5", both A flex (the shortening stiffens them slightly).   My hybrids and irons are regular flex and wedges are S200.

I actually played with steel shafts on my fairways between 2006-2010 (used Trimetals during 2006 and my dad gave me 975F 16.5 and 20.5 in 2007 for a Big Five Zero present).  The graphite shafts in stock length are a bit too long.  Titleist and TM have the right lie angles and my adjustment is to shorten the Titleist 1/2' or the TM 1" (with a Winn Excel RF grip for the former and Winn Lite Dri Tac midsize for the latter).

I also swing a little slower with woods vs irons.  Even 20 years ago I used regular flex woods and stiff irons.

I used to struggle with woods off the deck before.

That is one thing I have been pretty proficient at.  You play the ball about 2" behind your front instep.  You also want a little bit of spine tilt because your head needs to be behind the ball at impact. With any golf shot, you hit THROUGH the ball (hence the tee drill).

Another thing - the main reason people have trouble with woods is because of difficulty shifting weight to the front foot.  This is caused by TOO WIDE of a stance (should be slightly wider than shoulder width) or taking the BIG 90 DEGREE BACKSWING (too much weight  on the back foot).   The other thing is your backswing should be flatter (an iron swing is steep)  I take a pretty compact backswing.   Also, don't stand too close to the ball - the arms should extend slightly (not exactly hanging vertical).  Too many people try to tuck their arms in.

I have an outside-in swing by nature, so I use a slightly closed stance.  It does two things for me: promotes an inside-out swing and allows a less restricted backswing.  This is also a bit of a power stance.

My 910F fairway is set to D3 because I have a bit of an upright swing and I had the shaft length adjusted to 41.5" (because that is what I am comfortable with for a 5 wood).

Other thing - most people have a hard time launching a 15* 3 wood off the deck (even good golfers).  One is that the lie has to be pretty plush.   Most would fare better using a 4 wood (17*) or a strong 5 (18*) and then carry a 7 wood or 21H.  I find a 19-21* fww allows me to get around the golf course pretty well.

Go to Revolution Golf and watch some of Paul Wilson's videos.  His "anti-slice" series will help with the wood game.

Try putting the ball more in the middle of your stance and put just a touch more weight on your front leg. This will help create a down ward swing. And, hopefully give you a "cleaner" ball contact/flight.

I use to place a quarter partially under the ball when teaching my Grandson to hit fairway woods  and irons more crisply with a descending swing.  Hit the quarter, keep the quarter.   When he was 7 yrs old, he had a golf bag  pocketfull of my money....it worked.   He's now 15 and hits nice crisp irons and fairway woods.

Neat trick.  About like doing the dollar bill drill with a bunker shot (I was shown that about 4 years ago).

I've finalized my 910F at B3 (actually that setting works with my hybrids also).
