You should probably check with the governing body for your conference to make sure there are no local rules but as I understand it, only the pros need to use c-c grooves for several more years. However, it has now been illegal to manufacture non-conforming grooves for some time and if you practice a lot and go trough a set of wedges every few months like my son does, you'll have trouble finding anything but c-c grooves to replace them with.

BTW, I don't find much difference between the two sets of grooves. on soft fast greens I have more trouble with too much spin than not enough.

As you can see on this site, the USGA cannot tell a manufacturer what they can make.

Yes, that announcement was made, as an advertising ploy to get people running out and buying as many square groove wedge sets as they could.........remember the year of the wedge

But the manufacture of square grooves has not ended.........on this site just look under "clubs"--"wedges"

    Hi Quintin,

I wanted to jump in here to clarify a point. We still display the Vokey Spin Milled wedges (http://www.titleist.com/golf-clubs/wedges/vokey-spin-milled.aspx) on the site as a reference point for people to get more information on that particular model. While we no longer manufacture this version of the Spin Milled wedge, we want to make sure people are able to access information.

Here is a link to the USGA's FAQ around the implementation of the new groove rules:

    http://www.usga.org/news/2009/september/qa_groove.aspx

You can also check out Vokey.com for even more information on wedge technology including our latest introduction, the Spin Milled SM4 wedges (http://www.vokey.com/wedges/details/vokey-spin-milled.aspx).

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi Quintin,

Thanks for the post. This overview is from our product pages for the Spin Milled (SM2) and Spin Milled C-C (SM3) wedges. The description was provided to help players fully understand their options as the new groove rules took effect. As the page continues to explain...

"Spin Milled grooves produce a medium trajectory and high spin and conform to the Rules of Golf until 2024, except in tournaments governed by a Condition of Competition. Spin Milled C-C grooves produce a higher trajectory with medium spin and conform to the new 2010 Rules of Golf for grooves and can be used in events that adopt the new rules as a Condition of Competition."

Again, please feel free to email me or send me a PM if you have another question or if you would like to discuss further, I'd be more than happy to help clarify. Thanks a lot!

Mike - I love my SM3 wedges. Been using the 54-11 and 62-07 for a year now. I've had the 50-08 since Oct 2011. I've had the 58-04 for 3 months now with the intent of tight lies around the green and hard bunkers but have been finding out it works in a very wide variety of conditions. The 62-07 was a replacement for the SM2 60-07 and 64-07 because it does more than both put together (I've had great golf shots with the latter two also); it works well in soft and hard bunkers and varied lies and I use it where I have to pitch from a short distance vice chipping (along with brute force bunker shots where the putting surface is 8 ft from the bottom of the trap).

"Impact on Amateur Tournament Golfers The impact on amateurs who play tournaments will depend on the level of competition. Amateurs who play in USGA or R&A championships can stick with old grooves through 2013, but in 2014 must use grooves conforming to the new rules. Amateurs who get into professional tour-level tournaments via qualifying must be using new grooves in those Tour-level events as of Jan. 1, 2010. Whether the Condition of Competition will immediately apply to qualifiers for professional tour events is something that most of the major tours have yet to decide. Other major amateur tournaments, collegiate golf tournaments and state golf association championships will apply the new groove rules starting in 2014. What About Local and Club Tournaments? So you sometimes play tournaments, but only at the local club level - a men's golf association tournament, a charitable event or corporate-sponsored local tourney. What about those events? Local and club tournaments are free to implement the Condition of Competition and require the new grooves at any time. That might be as of Jan. 1, 2010, or it might not be until 2024. It's up to the individual tournament committees. But "guidance" provided by the USGA recommends that unless a tournament involves highly skilled amateurs, it not adopt the new groove rules prior to 2024." The above is a lift from "About.com" It would depend on whether or not your HS golf league would enforce the rules. I've already got c-c groove wedges since my score has improved to the point where I may be playing competitive golf again.
