Ap2s, weird distance problems

Hi there,

I need some advice. I just got a used set of AP2s with Project X 5.5 shafts (I got them verified so I know they're the real deal). I love the way they feel and look, however I'm having some really weird distance problems.

My old irons were Top Flight tours (Dynalite Gold R300). I'm pretty busy, but when I can get out to play often I'm not bad. I'll usually shoot between 5-10 over par when I'm in shape.

I hit the Top Flite irons consistantly the following distances:

3iron- 200

4iron- 190

5iron 180

6iron 170-175

7iron 160-165

8iron 155

9iron 140-145

PW 125-130

With the AP2s, I'm hitting:

3iron 210

4iron 195

5iron 180-185

6iron 170-180

7iron 150

8iron  135-140

9iron 120-130

PW 110-120

I'm hitting them well and I love the feel and workability, but this distance trouble is killing me. I have nothing from 150-175yrds, I've never heard of anything like that before. I'm killing the long irons but I can't even knock an 8 iron 150. The flight and trajectory is the same as my other irons. I know the lofts are a few degrees weaker on the AP2s than my old irons, but that wouldn't explain why my long irons are doing so well.

Could it be the Project X? I have to say I don't like the feel of them at all- they feel like someone stuck some pieces of rebar on a golf club. Could that be responsible for my weird lack of distance with the short irons?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Josh

You can never go wrong with R300.  One is Project X 5.5 is a stiff shaft.  That shouldn't affect short irons by THAT much (I took two identical 9 irons, one regular and the other stiff and the difference was 5 yards).

Double check your lie angles and lengths in relation to the longer clubs.  Not getting clean contact is a yardage killer.  I picked up my AP1s used and found the 6 and P to be a degree flat (got a free lie angle adjustment at GM).   Usually the weird distance is the opposite - loss of distance on longer irons.

Each Ap 2 iron has a few more degrees added to it than any other type of Iron.

Hi Josh,

You might want to have the lofts and lies checked on all of the irons to make sure they are to spec. Here is the chart for our standard loft and lie in AP2:

Thanks everyone. I got the lofts and lies checked and they were 1-2deg off on each club- consistantly weak lofts and flat lie. Thanks for the heads up.

Now I'm reshafting to DG but I can't find Tititlist's 355 collard iron ferrules anywhere. . . Titleist- why don't you sell them so people can work on your clubs without having them look weird using aftermarket parts?

Flat lies will kill your distance just about every time.  If you get clean contact you pull it severely.  You can get around an upright lie because you choke down on the club and get better distance.
