Tony, 

The AP2 Gap Wedge will offer a little more forgiveness, but slightly less spin.  If you are looking for added spin, then considering a Vokey would be a good alternative.

I prefer the vokey because it is more versatile and I like to use it more around the greens.  If you do like the vokey but it does not fill the distance requirements you need for it you could always get it bent to 51*.

@Skylar - I've been one to tinker with wedges.   When I got the SM4 60-10, I found that bending it to 59 was better for turf but also still able to hit greenside bunker shots that land soft on the green. 

Another thing that you could do is take a 50-08 and bend it to 51.  This gives enough bounce for long bunker shots and also takes care of distance requirements.  I had it set up this way when I had Eye 2 irons and it worked so well that my 54-11 got little use.  I still could bend my 52-12 to 51-11 and then (given that the AP1 PW is more like an old 9 iron) I would be pretty close to an old school setup.

A 54-14 bent to 53 is also nice if you want to do a 3 wedge setup with a 47 PW and 60 LW.  The 60-10 gives a bit of added dimension because it has enough bounce for soft sand but also works well on turf.   I carried an SM2 60-07 and 64-07 but, despite making great shots in their own right, each had their limitations (the former would dig a hole in soft sand and the latter wasn't so great on tight lies) and I played with an SM c-c 62-07 for a year.  

I would definitely go with the Vokey.  You can get more spin with it, and like someone said above, you can always bend it to 51*.  And Vokey's look cooler than the AP2's, Just saying ;)

I have a Vokey SM4 52-12 and 60-10 (bent to 59) along with an AP1 PW.   My purpose of the 52-12 is as a compromise between a gap wedge and sand wedge (I used to carry a 50-08 bent to 49 and a 54-14 but still have them available).   It has enough bounce for long bunker shots in soft sand but still good enough for turf shots and the full swing distance is only about  5 yards less than the 50.   I play the 60-10 for most greenside bunker shots.  I rarely do full swings with my Vokeys. 

It is rather true that a set "W" will hit a bit farther (about 5-10 yards) vs a specialty wedge mainly due to the spin.   I could hit a DCI "W" (51) the same distance as a Vokey 48; the former was also pretty good for approach shots.   If your purpose of a gap wedge is full swings, long pitch shots or bump n run shots, go with the AP2.   The AP2, with a little practice, CAN be used for long bunker shots (I do that with my AP1 PW). 

I played a Vokey 50-08 (bent to 51 and shortened to 35 1/4") because it performed better around the greens vs the Eye 2 W (48.5).  The latter was horrible off tight lies.

Also keep in mind that I am one that deviates from the traditional 47-52-56-60 setup.  

Hey Tony, I would personally go with the Vokey Sm4's . Nothing like the true solid feel of well-crafted wedges.

I've been a Vokey fiend for almost 6 years now (briefly strayed in 2009 with CG15 DSG 58 and 64 but went to SM2 60-07 and 64-07)

My first ever Vokey was a Tour Chrome 258-12 and I used that one between 2007-2009 for about 99 percent of my short game (short fall was longer bunker shots).

I've played SM c-c 54-11 (bent to 55), 58-04, 62-07 and still have my 50-08 (bent to 49) and 54-14 (bent to 53) available.  Didn't like the 48-06 or 58-12.  The nice thing about the 62-07 is that it works well in soft bunkers (it conquered the Bunker From Hell, an 8ft deep greenside bunker at Riverwalk Friars), hard bunkers, grass and turf and does the job of both the 60-07 and 64-07.  The 58-04 plays like an old school sand wedge (if you look at the leading edge, it has a lot of bounce) and it worked in soft sand.  With the SM c-c you factor the roll into your shot.

I've had the SM4 60-10 for 6 months now and love it to death (it also conquered the Bunker From Hell).  I use it for most of my greenside bunker shots and it really sticks the ball on the green.  The 52-12 also stops the ball pretty well but has some roll and works good for long bunker shots.  Don't know about how the SM4 60-07 plays but can say that the SM2 60-07 would dig a hole to China in a soft bunker.

I considered this as well. I just switched to AP2's and SM4's. With my prior set, I found that I wasn't using my gap wedge except for par 3's at 135 yards. I've had the AP2's for a month or so now, and just got the SM4's on Monday. With the 52-08, I can still hit the 135 yard tee shot, but can also stick a shorter pitch that I couldn't get before (even had a ball jump backwards yesterday after it landed). I am glad that I went with the 3 SM4's as opposed to adding another AP2, or regapping a 2 SM4 set and adding a long club.

I had CG15 DSG 58 and 64 for a year (2009); deadly accurate and good out of sand but horrible off tight lies - so I switched to SM2 60-07 and 64-07 later that year and played them till 2011 (when I exchanged both for a SM c-c 62-07 and played it until May of this year).  The SM4 60-10 (bent to 59) has to be the best lob wedge I have ever owned - it does it all.  I'm kind of at a toss up between using the SM c-c 50-08 and 54-14 or the SM4 52-12 (then again, I have enough room where I could bring all three to the golf course); the SM c-c 54-14 picks the ball better off a tight lie vs the SM4 52-12 and the 50-08 has the roll but the main goal of the 52-12 is SIMPLICITY (and maybe more training on it).
