Merry Christmas Team Titleist!!! :]  (just wanted to wish you all a great one)

I wanted to ask a question about Hybrid clubs. I know the answer is going to vary based on every different golfers yardage. So I'm in the process of getting a new set of irons 4-PW and I have been wanting to change up my hybrid. My biggest thing right now is do I keep the 4 iron in my bag and use a Hybrid (19 degrees) for a 3 iron? Or do I  just take out my actual 4 iron and replace it with a Hybrid (22 degrees) for a 4 iron? I have a college qualifying round comin up on Jan 2nd and I'm nervous for the change. But I have always had trouble with long irons. I just wanted som advice and hopefully I can get a decision soon. After all, all I want to do is bridge the gap of yardage between my clubs. Thank you Team Titleist and a very special thank you to Mr. Mike DePaolo for being the definition of customer service. Merry Christmas to all the staff and a very happy new year.

    Manuel,

If you were getting fit, the Club Fitter would recommend a hybrid over a long iron based on your consistency and gapping distances.  That being said, if you are more consistent with the hybrids over your long irons, and find yourself not using your longer irons that much, then you may find better results from the hybrids.

    Happy Holidays!

There's the other possibility of 17 and 21 fairways and 24 hybrid and take out the 4 iron.   This also leaves room for a 4 wedge setup.   If you have a high swing speed, the fitter could possibly recommend a strong 3 wood (13.5*) with 17 and 21 hybrids.

Remember that the equivalent loft hybrid will get about 5-10 yards more than the iron.  And sometimes a fairway wood will get 5-10 yards more vs the hybrid.

The 21 hybrid is a closer replacement for the 3 iron.   For instance, the AP1 3 iron is 20* and the player 3 iron is 21*.

I have a 910F 19* fairway wood (set at A3 - 20.5 loft) and 910H 21 and 27.  The 21H is set at A2  and the 27H is set at C3.  I have a 15 yard gap between the fairway and the hybrid and same between the 21 and 27. I tend to hit hybrids more conservative vs fairways.

    I also can hit a 7 wood (21) same distance as a 17H.

It really depends on the golfer, try both of them to see which works best for you.  Generally if you have trouble with long irons they suggest using hybrids.  I prefer hybrids because they are much easier to hit, and I can't hit the long irons.  No shame in using hybrids, many tour stars play them.

Bottom line is whatever it takes to play good golf.

There are a couple here and there in the PGA that play 7 woods (Stuart Appleby comes to mind).  Even TW uses a 19.5 fairway.  There are a couple that don't carry a 3 wood.   There were a couple Callie sponsored LPGA players that carried a 27 fairway (11 wood or UT wood).   Even the World's Greatest Bunker Player said he could have won another Masters with a 9 wood in the bag.

SInce 2006 the longest iron in my bag has been a 7.

I 100% agree with you Christian, I just took my 3 iron out of my bag because I can count on one hand how many times I have used it and replaced it with a 910 21 deg hybrid. Now since I live in Canada and there is snow on the ground I havent been able to use in on the course but I work at Golftown and from the simulators it seems like it is the perfect choice to fill that gap.

I would say it is YOUR bag, and you should get what YOU feel good about. Go to a place that you can hit the actual clubs without tape from grass tees (in SE Michigan there's places like Carl's Golfland and Miles of Golf). The good ones will let you hit however many balls you want, even if it takes you hours and you want to try 25 different clubs. Carl's won't even charge for virtually unlimited range balls when you're trying clubs. Really liberating if you are serious about getting the right clubs for you.

Once you figured out what you like hitting, and if you can afford it, I'd take what you've learned yourself to a fitter (those places usually also have excellent fitting service, Miles of Golf is even a certified Titleist fitter) and verify your distances to determine the makeup of your bag.

I had limited funds so I did not invest in fitting. I went for 4-PW and a 19* 910H to replace the 3i based on the sales guy's recommendation. In hindsight I should probably have gone for a higher lofted H, but that's because of the way that I hit MY clubs. Other people may have different results.

Make a day of it, go out and try a bunch of clubs and see what YOU like best :)

EXACTLY.  Whatever works in YOUR bag.   No rule says 10.5 driver-3-5 woods, 3H, 4-PW, 52-56-60 and putter for everyone.   I kind of wish I would have discovered 7 woods back in the day.   I've played some of my best golf with 13* driver, 7 wood, persimmon 10 wood and 34H. 8-PW, 54 sand wedge, 62 lob wedge and putter.  I also find it easier to hit a choke shot with the 910F 19* fairway vs using a 21H and I absolutely crush a 27H.   The persimmon 34H has been in my bag for 2 years now and I hit it a lot better than a 6 or 7 iron.
