Probably should post this in the wedge section but thought I could get some feedback this way. Just curious as I am replacing my sm5's with sm6's and addressing gaps. I have the 50 gap AP2 and jump to 56 and then 60. I plan to replace the 56 with a 54 and I was just curious for feedback about the lob wedge. I play the 60 fine, use it more than any club in my bag (except the flat one) but there will be a 6 degree jump now, so my long winded question is " If you play the 60 fine, are there any benefits to going to the 58 just to reduce the yardage gap? and how much different does the 58 play when compared to the 60? Just curious if anyone else has had this dilemma and how they felt about it.

You can always open the 58* when you need to. i went the opposite from SM5 54 and 58 to SM6 52, 56 & 60 and really love the selections i have. I can use all of them around the green depending on lie and conditions.

I see more and more of my buddies looking at the 58.... you hit a little further if you "scoop" on your wedges to help in the air. The best answer is is yes it's a good gap structure and as long as you have soft hands and are a feel player this should make up for a good year. Best of luck.
  4. no difference in 58 & 60 as you can easily open or close the face to make up that loft change, only reason I could see if you wanted to play a drastically different bounce or grind on the 2 wedges for specialty shots only... Pros do it based on courses they play on any given week but they ain't paying for those wedges.

thanks for the replies... i guess i am somewhere between trying to decide if I am thinking 58 b/c I want an excuse to try something different or if there is more of a benefit from the 2 degrees around the green (60) or from the approach (58)

I would ask yourself how often the 4-6 yard gap between the 58 and 60 causes you problems. I hit my 54 roughly 95 yards and my 60 around 75 yards. I don't have any issues hitting my 54 anywhere in the 75-95 yard gap. If that's too big of a gap for you, make sure you can do the same things around the green with the 58 as you currently do with the 60. My setup is 47 MB, 50 SM4, 54 SM4, 60 SM4. This was via a fitting at Oceanside. Biggest difference for me was the 60 from the sand for some reason.
  7. I have that exact setup, and have no complaints at all. I love my 50 degree AP2 and then have 54 and 60 degree wedges. I never try to hit the 60 past 30 yards so I don't worry about the yardage gap. I usually flight the 54 down and let it spin from 30-70 yards and hit more of a full shot from 70-100.

I agree with the above statement i have a 58 and just open it up when needed. I seem to have better control with the 58°
  9. I prefer the 58 because I think there is slightly more playability!

I have the AP1 4-9 and use vokey 48/52/58. That being said I don't have a big need to cover the gap between the 52/58. However, the jump from a 43* P and 48* vokey gives me issues on full shots.

Used to play Vokey 52/56/60. Switched to SM6 50/54/58 when I went from AP2 712s to AP2 716s, which are a degree or two stronger. Love the new set up and have not really had any issues not having a 60 anymore. Just lay it open if necessary.

The new SM6s will likely give you better distance no matter what, particularly with the higher lofted lob wedges, due to the improved CoG positioning.

Comparing my SM6 50F vs my old Vokey 52, I get about 6 or 7 yards more distance. I really see a big difference with my SM6 54S which typically gives me 10 yards over my old 56 on full swings. I find with the 58K I can get up to 8 or 9 yards more out of it than my old 60.07, yet, when I need less, I have no problem finding the right yardage with a 3/4 swing...or by choking down a little.

Since I put the SM6s in the bag, I feel my short game has gone up a notch, which is saying a lot, since my short game was always strong before. (Wish I could say the same about the rest of my game.)

I play Ap2 3-pw. My wedges are sm5 54m bent to 52 and sm5 58s. Bending the 54 to 52 helped cover the gap and being a m grind I can open it up for more versatile shots. Same with the 58.

Phillip, I changed from SM4 52, 56, 60 to SM6 50F, 54M, 58M and it is the best thing I have even done. I love the SM6 first of all, but the gaps work for me. My biggest question would be more of what grind(s) do I get vs. what lofts I get. I think you will be very happy with them.

Thank you for the reply Steven R. The grinds do have me a little puzzled, well namely the grind choices for the 54. I have read that the f is for full shots and considered neutral for both swing type and condition. However that 14 bounce seems like a lot for full shots especially on firmer conditions? It's also a big jump in bounce from the ap2 gap wedge. I really like the m grind in my sm5s but I worry it may not be as good for the 54 which I want for that 95 yard range. Also I had planned to keep with the m grind for my lob whether I stick with 60 or try 58 but keep hearing how amazing the k grind is. I really don't get crazy with opening my 60 but like being able to manipulate it a little when I want to, but....if the k is that great even on firm and tighter lies, it sounds like the playability from the rough it has in addition makes it sound too good to be true? I have always been a low bounce wedge player but I keep hearing the bounce is your friend argument..I play mostly at a public course most would consider a cow pasture league and money game wise. Very firm but generally ideal lies sitting up.

I prefer the 50/54/58 setup, as well. I find the 58 to be a lot more useful than the 60, and with less bounce, it's easy to open up and flop when needed.
