Hi all hope you may be able to help me with some advice. I am thinking about a new set of Titleist irons and do not know which road to go down. I am playing off a 13 handicap and presently using another manufacturers forged set of clubs, everything else in the bag is Titleist. I have used AP1 before but I prefer the forged feel even at my level of play. I don't know if the AP2 would be too difficult for me to use and I hear that the AP1 716 have a forged feel about them. So what do you guys think, I would appreciate your views.

Too individual to recommend. Maybe if you had more forgiveness, you might play off of a 10. But if your ball-striking is fairly consistent, you'll probably like the AP2 over the AP1. A good fitter may look at you and have a strong opinion and why to go with A or B. I love the feel of the AP2 on a level fairway, but my driver doesn't always give me what I want, and then I need the forgiveness of my AP1s.
  3. I agree with Don O. Pry should get fitted or if you have a retailer near you that lets you hit them outdoors. Have never hit the AP1's, but I loved the feel of my AP2's and thought they were very forgiving. Let us know what you figured out and what you think about them both. Good luck!
  4. I would recommend getting fit to see which one is the best option. I have the AP2 and love them. Being fit correctly made all the difference
  5. Mix set? 3-6 in ap1 and 7-P in ap2? Going to a Titleist Thursday fitting soon and going to ask about this.

I am playing off a 7.4 index right now. When I got my first set of AP2s (712) I was a 12 handicap. When I got my 716s the week after they were released I decided on playing PW-7i in AP2 and 6 and 5 iron in AP1, all the same shafts and specs. (I got fit for them.) I don't like heavy toplines, so any Game Improvement-type iron was not an option. I love the look and feel of blade-type players irons. I was concerned they might be too much club. They were not. In fact, I found I hit my old AP2-712 5i pretty well and have considered throwing it back in the bag to replace the AP1 5i, since, frankly, I don't like looking down at the thicker topline on the AP1. When I upgrade to new irons I will most likely not mix like I did this time, but stay with all AP2s or whatever it is that Titleist releases to replace it.

However, I will admit, the added forgiveness in the AP1 5 and 6 has been extremely helpful at times, and the feel is very sweet, regardless of the fact they are not forged.

If you normally hit your irons well, with good consistency, I would say AP2 is playable by a 13 handicap, no problem.

I wish Titleist would make an AP1 type game improvement iron with a bit smaller, more blade-style head and thinner top line, and since I'm wishing, forged as well. (Of course some Titleist guys who play the MB might say they already do, it's called the AP2!)
  7. Best advice is to get fitted. I know a few individuals who have a "mixed" set. (AP1s and AP2s) It all depends on what you need. Last I knew, even Mr. Breed of "The Golf Fix" had an AP1 4 iron mixed in with his usual AP2s. BTW, I have the AP1s and love them.

Hi all, thanks for all your replies. The Pro at our club has managed to source an AP2 7 iron for me to try tomorrow, (he has just joined the club and is in the process of setting up his shop). So I will hit the range and let you all know how I get on. A Titleist Thursday might be an option.
  9. My 2 cents: if you want to improve your game and don't practice get AP1s, and if you want to improve your swing and practice regularly get AP2s.

How far do you hit you 7 iron, and what flex shaft do you use?

If you hit less than 150yds, get AP1s with regular shafts, and if you hit more than 150yds get AP2s with stiff shafts, and if your 7 iron is 150yds then you're back to the first answer above.
