AP2s with Project X

I pick up my new 710 AP2s with Project x 5.0 this afternoon, and anxious to start playing with them tomorrow.
Does anyone have any comments or experience with this combo?  Specifically to ball flight & distance.

Thanks!

One of my most popular fits!  We typically order at 1 strong so let us know the scoop.

I have AP2's with X 6.0 shafts. Ball flight is lower and I'm 8-10 yards longer. I'm very happy with performance into greens with all of my irons.
I picked up a set custom fit a season and a half ago. Truly the best clubs I've hit to date. Easily a club longer with about the same trajectory I was hitting before which is mid-high flight. I love them.

Well, just returned from the range after practicing with the AP2s + Proj X 5.00...not totally pleased, but maybe just because the first session.  I've lost 15--20 yds with this combo, not sure if its the shaft or club.  I was playing TP R7 with DG S300, 8-iron easily could hit 150-160, 9-iron 130-145.  With the AP2s, I'm struggling to hit 8-iron 135-yd.  I hit my 52-deg gap wedge just as long as the 9-iron now!

My normal trajectory was high with distance, but it seems the Proj X flattened out the trajectory and put alot of spin on the ball because it just dies.  ANyone have any similar experience??

Thanks-

How's work the proyect shaft?

I've been playing this same combo for a little over a year now. Went from X-18 pro series to these. Much better feedback, and feel. The AP2s are awsome for hitting knockdowns,or making finesse shots. ball flight is a little higher 6 thru wedge. Distance is comperable for me for the most part. I do find that the PW and 9 will balloon and spin at times. But it depends on your swing. I don't know how well this combo would work for an aggressive steep swinger. Over all I have been really pleased with them. IMO the project X is better suited than DG for feel in this iron head.

I've had the same combo a little over a year now and I have to say these are the best irons I have ever had. Believe me when I say I've had plenty of sets of irons from Callaway's to Mizuno's. I am playing at about a 15 now but going lower each month. I have always hit a high ball and I get the same with these. i have not lost any distance, but like you when I first got them I did not hit them as far as my previous irons (X24s w/unifex). Then I started not trying to swing so had, my AP2s were lighter with the x 5.0s and I thought I need to swing harder. But then I started putting a smooth swing on the ball and man it was just great. My distance is the same or sometimes better, 8 iron 150 yards. I get kidded all the time about how often I would change irons sets, but that will not happen for some time not because I have found the right combo for me. I do have to say the new AP2s look awful sweet!

I have AP2's with Project X 6.0 and gained 10 - 15 yards in distance with 6 - P and about 10 yards with 3 - 5.  Hopefully, you went through a fitting for the shafts which is critical.  Getting the right shaft is mandatory.

they have a great ball flight the start low and rise up quick and land soft like a butterfly with sore feet

You should have gotten the DG S300's. If not then you should have them bent a little strong. I think you are the first person who said their ball flight was lowered with the Project X shafts. ???

First of all, I want to thank everyone for all your responses.  They have all been very helpful, thank you.

I spent 5-hrs at Trump National for another practice session with the AP2s last weekend.  And unfortunately, much the same response from the AP2s with the Proj X: lost yardage.  I really do think this can be attributed to the shaft.  I was hitting the 7I to a flag 152-yds out with a slight ocean breeze into me.  The trajectory was good and dead straight, I thought I was flying the flag and then the ball dropped 20-yds short!  Needless to say, this has been really frustrating, especially since I'm a solid 5.

While practicing I read Larry's response (thanks Larry!), and I tried adjusting swing, swing speed, etc.  A few shots I could muster flying the flag with 7I but mostly always fell quite short.
For kicks, I stopped at the local golf shop and picked up a demo club which had the KBS Tour 90S shaft.  This shaft with an Adams CB2 6I I was flying a 165-yd flag into a stiff ocean breeze. I couldn't hit the green with the AP2.  Definitely the shaft.

So I intend to revisit the fitting.  The golf shop who told me the Proj x 5.0 was perfect match for my swing was wrong!

Thanks again to all.

The answer to the distance difference is that most TM clubs are made a club strong to make the amatuer think they are longer than they really are.  Your AP2 8 iron will be the same loft as your R7's 9 iron.  So your distance with the same loft club are the same.  And the AP2's are a vastly superior club.  I also have the Project X shaft in mine but they are 6.0.  Don't let the other manufacturers fool you with there manipulated lofts.  Hit the club that goes the distance you need and don't try to compare one 8 iron to the next because they are not the same.

If you look at the spec's for the Adam's CB2's I believe you will find that they are quite stronger than the AP2's.  I just ordered my AP2's with S300 shafts which is what I had in my previous 704.CB's.  I hope I'm not disappointed.

Dom:  we definitely need to check the lies and lofts and just compare apples to apples.  I believe most people are correct in the difference in lofts between brands.  I understand the concern and the frustration.  Let's turn it around and find an advanced fitter near you that can help.  All we may need to do is tweak lofts.
