Driver Length

  1. Hey guys, got a question for you.  If you order a 44.5'' driver directly from Titleist, is that the same shaft as the one that would come in a 45'' club only cut down a half inch?  Or are the shafts manufactured to create a 44.5'' club?  Just wondering because I'm thinking about purchasing a 913 D3 and have contemplated going a bit shorter with it.  I'm still undecided though.  If I ordered a standard length driver and then decided to cut it down and add weight to get the club back to the proper swingweight, would I have the same club as ordering one 44.5'' straight from Titleist?  Basically, I'm just asking if I would be messing up that nice stock shaft Titleist offers by cutting it down.  Thanks for any help, Dennis.

If you order a 44.5" driver, we would use the same shaft as a 45" driver and butt cut it 1/2".  We would also change the swingweight screw to a 11 or 14 gram weight instead of the 9 gram (whichever you prefer - make that request when ordering).  There is no upcharge to do that.  If you get a 45" driver and have it cut down yourself and then order a heavier weight to bring it back to swingweight, the MSRP to purchase a single weight is $25.00, although your shop could charge you less.

I agree with Cathi - you might as well order it built with the 44.5" shaft.  The shop is going to charge about $15 for a cut and regrip (this is the cheapest with the 52 gram grip)  and still the cost of the weight.

I've been using a 44.5" driver probably 5 years now.  I've tried 44 and 45.  I could swing away with a 44 but my general shot was a power fade.  With 45, my best distance was a slight pull but my mishit was a high push-fade.  44.5" goes straight down the middle.

    Cathi,

Do you know if the 913's will have a swing weight kit like the 910's did? And will I be able to have my local shop order it for me?

    Thanks!

  5. Thanks for the help guys.  Only reason I wouldn't order it cut down is once you do that, you can't go back.  Appreciate the responses, Dennis

You can always upright the lie angle one step (i.e, +..75*) if you experience fading or slicing.

Hi Joshua, Yes, we will be offering a swingweight kit and this year, we will also be offering single weights through any pro shop.  The best thing is to order the drver with your preferred swingweight - there is no upcharge and custom orders run about 3 days.

If you where to buy an driver shaft aftermarket, most driver shafts (sans long driver competition shafts) are produced to a 46" and trimmed to customer specifications (most of the time from the butt, but if a customer wants a slightly stouter shaft it will be tipped trimmed). In Titleist case, MRC (Mitsubishi) is most likely making them to 45" avoiding all that yield loss on the productions of thousands of shafts for the 913.

Your 44.5” request would be the same as the 45” only a custom order (Team Titleist can confirm this exactly – I do not work for titleist) But the 44.5” is a smart move, ive been for the last couple of years cutting them down to 44.5” with no discernible loss of distance and only gaining accuracy.  Notably, I have probably gained yards from hitting the sweet spot more.  Take note, most PGA pro’s, the average driver length on tour is 44-45” with most coming in at 44.5” (bubba Watson @ 44.5” and he’s 6’4”)  So you are right on target with your equipment request.

Even Jim McClean recommends a driver between 44-44.5" for most golfers in his book "The Three Scoring Clubs".
