Cutting Driver Shaft

  1. Hi guys,

I am thinking of cutting 0.75-1 inch from the butt of my driver shaft (Aldila RIPd NV, Stiff). It is currently 45.75 inches weighing 70grams and the club head weighs 204gms. Can anyone tell me what will happen to (a) the flex of the club; and (b) the swingweight? Is this recommended?

I am struggling to find the centre of the clubface consistently but am able to hit my 15 deg 43 inch 3 wood solidly off the middle 90% of the time.

    Thanks

    Andrew

The flex will not change enough to effect you. You can only change the flex of a shaft significantly by cutting of some of the hosel. The swing weight will not change. I would recommend going to get fit before you do this. and make sure your PGA pro approves.

  3. This is not correct, the swing weight will change 3 points per half inch you shorten it, so if you cut 1 inch off it will be 6 swingweights lighter. This can be countered by adding a heavier weight or lightening the grip. also due to the lighter swingweight the shaft will seemingly play stiffer but probably not enough to be a big deal.

swing weight will change some, but  WILL NOT   affect the ball flight. When we shorten the length of shaft in our fitting sessions the players will have a more consiistent on center hit.  A GREAT trade off.  I have asked the Titleist shaft engineers about this and they have confirmed it as well.

Best to get fitted first tho and find out what your best length really is --- get fit outdoors, hitting from grass using a launch monitor and Pro V golf balls.

I agree with Steve B's comments I cut one of my shafts and just added additional swing weight took off 1" and added 12 gram weight shaft stiffness remained the same or at least did not notice it ! Did improve my % of center hits on the club face
  6. The shaft flex will play slightly stiffer at 45", the swing weight will be reduced by several points, likely in the range of D2 to C6. You can add weight to the head to keep the swing weight up and this will also soften the flex slightly. As a club maker in the 90s I believe it will help you with center hits, 45.75 is long and just as it is harder to hit it as consistent as your 3 wood or 5 wood, it will be easier to hit it pure if it is a little shorter.

    good luck

I have a Burner 2007 HT Draw driver with 45" shaft and it is marked "M" flex (senior) but it plays closer to regular since the stock shaft is 45.75. It has a Winn Excel RF oversize grip on it.

    In regards to swingweight:

Shaft length -  for every 1/2" on steel it is 3 points.  Graphite is about 2.5 points.

Grip weight change - 1 point for every 5 grams

Head weight change - 1 point for every 2 grams.

A standard rubber grip is 52g and a midsize is 63 or so; the latter decreases swingweight by  2 points.  A Winn Excel RF is 42g for standard and 43g for midsize and increases the swingweight by 2 points and 4 points, respectively.  A Winn Lite grip is 25g standard and 26 oversize so do the math at 5 grams per swingweight point for grip.

I've had one case where I have had to put a heavier grip on a club.  I added a 1" extension to my Louisville persimmon 5 wood to bring the shaft length to 42".  With the Excel RF midsize, it was D9.  I put a Golf Pride Tour Wrap midsize and the swingweight decreased to D5.
