I have been professionally fit for every single club in my bag. I am a 6 handicap and I know that you are a 12. I am 13 and play national tournaments at 6600-6800 yards. I also am the number one junior on my interclub team and I won the first event of the year with a 38 on a 6500 yard course. (interclub plays 9 holes.) We have 15 juniors on our interclub team. One of them has been playing for 9 years and his dad is the golf coach at davidson and went to wake forest on the arnold palmer scholarship. I have been playing for 1 year and beat him on a consistent basis. I know what I am talking about and I am tired of guys like you who may have been playing forever, contradicting me. As a fact (no offense) I am a better golfer than you. I am younger and I only hit it 200 yards of the tee. I know what I am talking about.

Needing two wedges gap and sand wedge. I normally play on firm conditions and just want to make sure I don't get too much bounce or less bounce. I'm a digger if this helps

Hi Bryce,

If you are a digger and typically play on firm conditions you might want to look at a wedge with a medium bounce - or a "tweener" bounce. Here is some advice from the Vokey wedge selection guide.

"If you are a Driver-Digger choose wedges with more bounce for maximum playability from the sand. For firm conditions, choose a wedge with medium bounce. For soft conditions, choose wedges with more bounce."

I play a 50-08 (bent to 51), 54-11 (bent to 55), 58-04 (actually plays like an old skool sand wedge) and 62-07. These would be classified "medium bounce" and they work in a wide variety of conditions. In regards to 60* wedges... you may want to think about making the lie angle 1/2* more upright than your gap and sand wedge, given the 60 is a 35" club. Lesson learned. A club that is flat is harder to hit (you get things like spanking the shot with a full swing and it shoots off to the right).

In regards to the bounce thing.... what I'm saying is exactly what the folks at team titleist are saying (and if you look at the wedge specs they confirm it). This is black and white. If my comment sounded like contradicting, sorry. Just to let you know, I'm not one of the so-called arrogant people you may encounter here. I often do my homework when I make a post. I'm also one of those that would laud someone younger that happens to play scratch golf. I don't claim to know everything either. I don't hit a pitching wedge 160 yards and use a triple x flex club and barely struggle to play bogey golf. I drive about 220-230 and use a senior flex draw driver with 13 degrees loft. I use regular flex clubs otherwise. I have an 85 mph golf swing. I have to use a wood on the 400+ yard par 4s to the green and the way I get pars and birdies is by getting down in 2 from 20-30 yards. I have probably learned more details about golf since 2006 and I've gone from barely breaking 100 and am pretty close to breaking 80 on a standard 6200 yard golf course (now that I have found a niche on the middle game and have pretty much gotten used to my equipment). I play golf about every 2 weeks casually. I also have had a strong short game since 2006 (need it due to lack of distance). I know about clubfitting because I got into clubmaking in 2009 and constructed a set of irons; this is also where I found out that I had been playing with ill-fit clubs. I've been working with a couple fitters in the SD area and they have helped me dial my clubs in. I hit the ball dead straight with everything and can do some shot shaping. To be honest with you, for all intense purposes, I played almost no golf between 1977 and 2006 (I was in the Navy and also working on my Master's degree and I played maybe 5 times between 1993-2003 and none between 2003-2006). Also, when I was a soph in HS I could out drive most of the men at the Country Club I caddied at but the reason I played bogey golf was my short game sucked (especially putting) and I used a 3 wood off the tee because I could not hit a driver (I also played on the high school golf team). My golf game has been in a bit of a rebuilding process since 2006. One was getting used to playing graphite shafted metal woods (I played with persimmons and a set of 1967 vintage irons) and learning to hit a driver (I finally got the RIGHT one 2 years ago and it works so well I just can't justify dropping $400 on the latest). The other is that my mobility is nowhere what it was a long time ago along with the fact that I gained an inch in height somehow. The third was I had to change my golf swing because I developed back problems and an unexplained glitch in 2008 that caused an onset of shanking - I had to change my setup for about a year and the only irons I carried were the 8 down to the lob wedge (I played with a driver, 5 wood, 5H-7H and the short irons and it took me about a year to get my wood game consistent; I also broke 90 at the beginning of 2009 and have been on a bit of a plateau with my score on the regulation courses being 85 for 18 and playing near par on the shorter courses). I've also been playing with used clubs (the thing is that I know what shafts work for me because of clubmaking) because I am a bit reluctant to drop $2000 on new clubs when they may or may not meet my needs (the clubs I bought new in my bag are my wedges). Quite frankly, I'm not a professional golfer, so there is really no justification to spend that much on a set of golf clubs until I start playing competitive golf again. The main reason my golf score has remained stagnant at 85 for 18 since 2011 until about Feb of this year is I changed my irons from the do it yourself set to alternating between Titleist DCI 981 and Ping Eye 2 irons and having a weak point. I just upgraded my irons to AP1 2008 recently (6-PW) and, quite frankly,they are far superior and I have no trouble hitting a 6 iron. My middle game has been a bit spotty because I have struggled with the 5-7 irons (I reverted to using a 5H and 7H earlier this year and my middle game has been good). I actually foresee my golf game dropping to the 70s by the end of the year. Like I say, when I play golf I play for fun. I do things like play with 8 clubs (shot +2 at National City par 34 using a 5W, 28-32-38H 8-PW, SW, LW in 2009) or 10 (best par count at Tecolote Canyon was 10 pars in 13 holes; the only reason I bogeyed 3 holes was because I hit on the back of the green with a persimmon 34H) and shot 42 for 9 at Riverwalk Friars carrying a persimmon 5 wood and 10 wood in my bag. Sorry about being so long. Will drop you a message.

Just to let the rest of the group know... didn't intend to offend anyone with my post about digger bounce. My response concurred with a Team Titleist rep, the spec sheets for the Vokey wedges and plus I would venture to say my short game probably equals that of most scratch golfers. I know my two weak points in my golf game are short putts and previously my middle game (I've dropped 2 strokes per 9 holes since March by using a 34H instead of a 6 or 7 iron when I had the Eye 2s). To laud Nate S (and a few other juniors).... give credit where credit is due. I've read most of his posts throughout the forum and he has a pretty good knowledge of the game. For someone who is 13-15 and having a 6 hcp after playing one year is a major accomplishment.

I have an SM3 50-08 (bent to 51) and that is my go-to wedge. I use it for about 90 percent of my pitch shots within 60 yards of the pin. Good for a little show off action from 25 yards in because I pretty much drop those shots within a couple feet of the pin (last time I left one 6" from the pin in the presence of one of the greenskeepers last Friday). Your 56-08 should work OK if play in firm conditions. I would still keep the 56-14 available in the event you play at a course with very soft bunkers. The reason I play a 54-11 (bent to 55) is because it works in a wide variety of conditions.

I'm very particular about keeping my stuff very clean looking, therefore I'm keeping my sand scuffed sand wedge with a 14 bounce for the sand or anything else. I always get two sand wedges-1 for grass shots and 1 for just sand alone.

I clean my clubs; however, I do have to admit that some have a certain amount of "character" (as evidenced by the wear marks on the soles). Speaking of "character", the award would have to go to a persimmon 10 wood that I carried for a year before buying my current 5H (I got it from Louisville Golf in 2010 and it was my 140-160 club);I had a lot of fun with it and really abused it.
