I think all golf architects have figured it out by now, but if you want to make a short par three on Tour one heck of a challenge, just put a stadium around it. Since I will most likely never have the opportunity to hit a shot in front of several thousand screaming fans, I will never truly know what this is like. I would consider it to be somewhat like first tee jitters on steroids.

Since all golfers are a little bit masochistic, and I happen to be one of those guys who enjoys the pressure, I would like to believe that I would knock it stiff. However, I watch these guys on tour miss an easy 150 yard shot and I wonder if I would need a new pair of shorts after that experience.

16 in Phoenix is one crazy hole. I often can't decide if the pros love it or hate it. I think it's great for golf, and great for the fans, but deep down I really wonder how I would fare. What do you guys think? Would you knock it stiff or mess in your trousers?

I think I would be somewhere in between knocking it stiff and messing the trousers. I often have wondered which is more intimidating, 16 at Phoenix or 17 at Sawgrass... thoughts?

Great question.....golf is tough as it is. One swing with all of that going on is a tough scene. I love the 16th at WMPO and hope they never change it but I also hope no other tourney tries to replicate it. It is so unique and it belongs in Phoenix for 4 days a year. It's so fun to watch and how about the amateur who made the ace there on Wednesday during the ProAm, the first of his life? What a dream scenario that is!

I've played Sawgrass and 17 wasn't tough. The green is huge. The putt was harder than the approach. I also only had about 7 people watching me too...  I'm assuming 17 is way harder with the gallery and the water. 16 is longer but there's less trouble from the course that is...

I agree with ya.  IMO, 16 at Phoenix seems to be a tougher shot than 17 at Sawgrass..  Just b/c of the stadium feel and how close everything is...

I remember playing in a club championship once a long time ago and did it for fun.. I knew i wasn't going to win but figured i give it a shot..  On the first tee they actually had a mic and said your name...  So mind you there's the group i'm playing with and people on the practice green..   I was VERY nervous and just couldn't calm myself down..  the shot was good but i was still shaking...  I don't know how the pros do it...  God bless them...

  6. I agree...I am lucky to have played them both...basically without the crowd watching the 17th at Sawgrass is probably more stressful however with a large crowd I would give the edge to the 16th at TPC Scottsdale!

BTW, I still put my ball in the water on 17th at Sawgrass! LOL
