    I was watching the Frys.com Open (Soon to be Safeway?) yesterday and when Kevin N. hit his Titleist driver off the deck the sparks went flying.  It was so impressive that during the telecast it was repeated in slow motion.

    Do we know what's causing this impressive phenomenon?  Is it only the 915 drivers or does it to the other "metals".

    I don't recall having this discussion with the 913s.

    Anyway, I think its great for Titleist.  Dive a ball and watch the sparks fly.

    Hi Mark,

    When metal (ie: Titanium) drivers finally became the norm, replacing previous generations of persimmon or composite drivers, I came across an article that explained that the sparks were a result of the metal of the driver being struck against small particles of sand in the turf. The analogy given was that it was akin to a grinding wheel and how the sparks fly off when grinding various types of metal. The article went on to discuss that it titanium was more prone to the sparks flying than other types of metals.

    From what I remember, this started when Titanium drivers became the norm, but I'm sure there are other metals that will produce the same sparks.  It actually happens quite frequently but because it's so quick and we generally play in bright sunlight, it generally goes unnoticed.  I played the other evening just before dark and noticed sparks on a couple of my shots.

    Sparks from Titanium Drivers and Titanium Faced Irons can cause fires.
