So I've noticed that my friend and I hit our tee shots about the same distance (~270 yds) yet he has 20 yards on me when it comes to irons, anyone know why this could be happening?

    Additional Info:

My friend hits his 8 iron ~160 yds where as I hit mine ~140 yds

He has Titleist AP2's and I have miz Mp 59's

Not an unusual situation.  I had a friend who could outdrive me by 30 yards in high school (he easily hit them over 300 and I hit somewhere about 270 or so).   I outhit him on the irons (he would hit his 7 iron about 135 and I hit mine about 150 - keep in mind these are 1970s irons so the loft of a 7 iron back then was about 37* or so).

I know people that can swing away on a driver but get average distance on irons.  They tend to swing a little slower for more accuracy.

I also took an AP1 8 iron vs a 755 8 iron (the loft of the AP1 is 36* and the loft of the 755 was 37*) and the former goes 10 yards farther.   Equally well hitting shots.  Also, I get 10 yards less with my Black Cat irons vs my AP1s.

I have an SQ2 30* hybrid that I get 15 more yards vs my 7 iron (and there is only 2* loft difference).

What would happen if you swung his irons?

My guess is his irons are set with stronger lofts, but he might also deloft the face more than you at impact. Try hitting his irons and see what happens.
