I've been thinking about this for over a year now and understand how difficult it is. But nothing will happen unless I do something about it so I have committed to making a move next year.
I'll be moving to California from New Jersey / New York early 2014. I am an architect by trade and so I have been contacting Golf Course / Resort Architects for positions. This is proving to be a little difficult because I am doing this 7 months in advance and from the opposite side of the country.
My advice is to go for it.

DD, if golf is your passion and what you want to do, then you must make the sacrifices to achieve your goal. If you love your work, you never work a day in your life. there are all sorts of ways to get into the golf business - become a PGA apprentice, go to work for golf service or manufacturer, find an area that needs a golf practice facility and open one. Might I suggest you brainstorm with your close friends and a case of beer and see what you come up with? You might amaze yourself with the ideas you come up with.

In San Diego it is easy..... quite a few executive courses in the county and a couple regular courses that offer 9 hole rates (Admiral Baker and Riverwalk along Friars Rd). There have been occasions where I have played 9 holes before work (generally on a working Friday). In the summer, I can get out before 6AM and be done with 9 by 7:30 (and this is at Admiral Baker and Riverwalk).
One is dragging one's hiney out of bed at 0 dark 30 to get out at first light. The other is dressing in layers during winter
Another thing that helps is working a 9-80 schedule where one works 9 hours per day M-Th and 8 hours every other Friday.
Swing shift - not that you would have a life but you CAN play golf every day.

I think everyone wants to find that answer. One option is to win the lottery, but we all know that's probably not going to happen. I have a full time job, a wife and 4 kids, and a limited budget. What I have done this summer is change my work schedule to a 4 day a week - 10 hour a day schedule. With that I have at least 1 day open during the week to play and then I try to play a little on the weekends.

Dallin - I think you make have something with the lottery angle... Now, I just need to buy a ticket to have a chance to win....
Seriously, it is about balancing priorities in life. All of us place golf pretty high up on the priority list, but I have to say that it is not at the top. You need to look at what is most important to you and set your priorities accordingly.
For me, family always comes first with job as a close second (because the job makes everything else possible). Golf is probably next on that list. If I could somehow manage to intertwine golf and job into one, that would be fantastic. However, I have to keep in mind that family is the top priority. If it would place a fiscal burdon (which I'm sure any golf career would for me) I could not move forward because it would conflict with my priorities; likewise, if I thought golf would materially conflict with my family relationships, I would have to rethink what I was doing. At the end of the day, I have a very understanding wife that accepts my obsession with golf, playing in lots of torunaments (often away from home), and playing quite a bit while I am home. Would it be fun to play golf every day or have a golf-based career? Yes, but it would not be worth negatively impacting my family.
Just my thoughts as I have wondered the same thing from time to time. Figure out what your priorities are personally, then set forth your course of action. Good luck with whatever path you take.
Now, back to the lottery idea.... I will have to go check and see how many millions the pots are up to now and maybe it wil be worth it to buy that ticket...

If you can figure it out, please share! I'm fortunate and have a job where I can, for the most part, make my own schedule. I'll try to schedule things early or late so I can sneak in a round or some practice. I'm not sure if it'll help you, but creative scheduling is key for me.
