I don't know if anyone else seems to be suffering from a bad case of golf fever like myself haha but it's getting bad. What are you people stuck in states with the snowy winter weather doing to prepare for the upcoming golf season?

I myself have started doing the Joey D Golf workout program (AS OF TODAY) and doing a lot of swing changes. Spent a lot of time at the local indoor range rebuilding a swing and grooving the swing in on my free time in my living room, which resulted in a hole in the ceiling and the carpet... yes i took a carpet divot. In all fairness, the divot would have promised ball-turf contact and I would have flushed it if there was a ball there haha.

Yea I am def getting the fever, especially with new 714's just sitting in my house begging for me to use them!   The bad thing about here though is there is not really any indoor facilities to at least swing the club and I really dont want a hole in my ceiling!!

My fever seems to be the only thing above average this time of year.  32F is still the long range goal.

My course includes a membership in a health club, so I'm working out at there focusing on flexibility and endurance and eating sensibly to wear off my hibernation coat, and adding TPI stretches for hamstrings and lower back.  The ceilings are only 8 feet at home and even a backswing with a lob wedge will remodel the ceilling.  Fortunately so far, one of the days of the weekend have been over 20F and the outdoor range from heated mats has been available.  I have an 11 foot putting mat on hardwood (I managed to make that the trade for not remodeling the ceiling) that simulates a 10-11 stimp green.  The previous carpet location was more like a 0.5 stimp and didn't translate well on distance control on course.

The guys at the range say that Steve Stricker sharpens his short game from mats during the winter.  As another sweeper, I'll see how well that translates to the course for me.  Should work if I keep in at least the first cut of rough.  The only place to practice chipping from deep fescue is from deep fescue.

There is some translation loss from mats to turf, but I'm going to work with the pro from the mats to recheck my irons from 2 years ago.  The AP1s with A-Flex graphite are launching a lot higher than when I got them (lessons and practice/playing have improved my swing). so I may to decide to look at 714s or reshafting my 712s for a shaft for where I am now.  When the courses finally open in April, I want to just focus on game management and trust the shot I select.

Although I don't live in a "cold weather" state, i've been able to play once in the last month.  That day the wind was blowing over 25mph steady and gusting to 40mph.  So I learned I can hit a 9 iron 175 yards and a 9 iron 65 yards......

Winter is not much fun for golfers up north. Aren't there indoor ranges up there? We acquired a good hitting mat from our club and put up a net so we could hit balls on bad days. Also, we bought an Optishot system and it's a lot of fun - it's not perfect, but it does cure the itch when the weather says, "No".

    Bryan,

Where abouts do you live? I'm on the north shore in Massachusetts and I hear you on the golf fever. I can remember around the same time last year feeling the exact same way. No amount of skiing/snowboarding is going to stifle my appetite for warm weather and the golf associated with it. We got an indoor simulator/bar establishment called OptiGolf up in Middleton that's been able to keep me busy. Also have been visiting the heated tees at the local range quite a bit, just trying to keep the rust off.

As far as swing changes, I'm not much of a tinkerer but I was really pleased with my game at the end of last season. The longest I have gone without swing a club since then has probably been about 2 weeks... between Optigolf, the range, or my living room I'm always taking a few cuts trying to keep that swing in tact as best I can. I also putt a TON in my hallway. Don't have one of those fancy putting mats so I use a flat coaster that acts as the hole, and my rug... it's rolling at about a 9.5 on the stimp.

    Good luck this year.

    Stay Busy

I know what you mean  about golf fever, I am lucky enough to have a pretty nice indoor facility somewhat close by or else I would be really losing my mind . Lots of indoor putting and chipping when I cannot get there.

The last time I was able to tee it up was on 12/29 which in CT is pretty late in the year, 1/2 a foot of snow today is making golf season seem further away though.

Let's think of this as winter rust prevention.  For the winter, I am doing bootcamp classes and pilates to improve power and flexibility.  Fortunately, my place has ceilings high enough to swing driver and my office has a rug that stimps around 13-14.  Also sporting the compression gear and FJ Wintersofs and hitting balls outside in below freezing weather off of mats.
