Match play season has started again at our club, and I have developed a strategy that may help other team Titleist members. Look to hit winners, and more importantly, reduce the unforced errors. If at all possible, don't give away a hole. Force your opponent to hit winners, ie make birdies to beat you. In simple terms:

    1. Keep the ball in play. If that means hitting less than driver off the tee, so be it. But don't give your opponent the advantage right from the start.

    2. Hit greens, but don't shoot for pins. Unless, you are down 3 and forced to make something happen, fairways and greens are the best formula.

    3. Don't panic. In 3 of my last 4 matches, I was down 2 early. Stick to your game plan unless you start running out of holes.

    4. Don't be afraid to concede a 2 foot putt early. If a guy has a 2 foot putt on the 3rd hole to halve the hole, give it to him. He is not going to miss, and the motivation you give him for forcing him to putt could backfire. Yesterday, in a 2 man team match play, we were all square playing the 4th hole, and they made us putt a 2 footer straight up hill, that should have been conceded. I said to my partner we got this. Turned out to be true. Now, a 2 foot side hill putt on the 17th to halve the hole is entirely different.

    5. Don't give up on a hole, ever. Until you have officially lost the hole, never concede regardless of where you on in the match. One hole could turn all the momentum.

    6. Remember to breath and have fun. Most of us will have to go to our real jobs the next day regardless of the result of this golf game. Enjoy the moment and the thrill of competition.
