I was just wondering if any of you have any odd golfing quirks.  Mine are I don't like people touching my clubs or my bag.  God forbid someone wants to hit my clubs!  Ha!  People may think I'm weird but that's what I feel.  My regular playing partner never hits a ball that he finds.  He thinks they're bad luck.  Curious to see what other T.T. member quirks are.  Thanks!

Golf ball must be upside down on the tee.

At impact, club has to hit the "Titleist" script.

Great post. Interesting to see the responses. I'm sure the pre-shot routine could show some of the quirks for a lot of people. Ball mark has to be a quarter from 1976, heads up every time. Towel must be white and of the brand "Marriot" (shhhhhh) The left shoe must go on before the right one. Always two gloves hanging off the bag. Superstitions...I got a bunch

Agree, great post. Ball marker has to be quarter from 1974, always have 7 long tees, 5 par 3 tees, 4 markers, and same ball mark repair tool(Prairie Isle Golf Club, had it 10 years). Always have three new balls in pockets.

My quirk is the common phrase, "knock it in" that invariably someone in my group will say when it is your time to putt. I have heard this term for 50 years so I am used to it but always wonder why someone would putt and not try to hole the ball.

CoolBreeze poker chip ball marker, Cameron Pivot Tool, and 2 tees in right pocket. Yardage book rear right pocket. Glove rear left pocket. 4-6 Dufner-like waggles and go time!

    - I can't have anything in my pockets other than 1 tee, SC ball marker and SC divot tool.  All items are in my left front pocket and never anywhere else.

    - I never ever play a found ball.  There are bad luck!

    - The Number on the ball always has to be facing up on the tee

    - I mark my ball with a 4-3-2 (kids birthdays) on the opposite side of the alignment arrow.  This marking is always lined up to be on the side so it struck by my putter.

What if it's your ball you find??  Luck? What is luck? No such thing.

I was always very superstitious with sports growing up.  I took a little break from being a golf nut for a few years and when I came back, I was less serious and more focused on just having fun.  So now I can't think of one superstitious thing or odd quirk.  I'm sure they are there, and a few years ago I could have had a long list, but right now I can't think of any.  My pre-shot routine is always the same, but I don't really think that's odd.

I always mark my ProV with a green Sharpie. I also typically have a "tournament" shirt that I try to wear for all competitions. Last year's version -- a bright orange solid -- got me successfully through four rounds to the semifinal of my club's summer-long match play tournament. Thanks. J.A.C.

Although I am quirky.....  I really have no particular things I must do anymore.  I do tee the ball with label facing the hole, but it doesn't matter if it's not.  Playing the ball down you hit it as is anyways.

I do hate any competition that has "gimme putts" or "mulligans".  Play golf the correct way to get a true handicap.

You can play found balls but they must be washed and not used till at least one round later (show them some love and they reciprocate).  Glove goes in left front pocket, spin iron in right hand before addressing ball.

Clubs go in specific slots in golf bag. It throws off the balance of the bag if incorrect, causing bad shots.

    Nothing to crazy!

I suppose you could call some of the following items quirks or superstitions, but I don't really think of them that way.  I have four different ball markers that I carry in my bag and which ever one I grab out of the bag is the one I'm using that day.  I'll usual carry a couple tees in my pocket, but I'll also use one that is left on a tee box and I'll usually use a broken tee left on the tee box on par 3s. I always carry two towels, one small one that I keep wet for cleaning my ball and a larger one for cleaning clubs after shots.  I'll play a ball that I find as long as it's a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x (no older than the last model), although I usually give the Pro V's to my younger brother.  If the ball is not a Pro V1 or 1x, then I leave it laying on the next tee box.

That is pretty much the extent of my "habits".

YES!......I am very sensitive to playing partners to stay out of my line of sight when preparing to hit. This usually occurs when player creeps up when getting ready to hit and they are situated on or near other side of fairway. You can see in the corner of your eye, and would never hit them, but a true distraction. Hold your horses and wait for a minute dude!

I think my only quirk is that my tees and divot tool always go in my left pocket. I'm sure my playing partners would tell you I have more.

Anybody who knows me would probably agree that I have a lot of quirks, but these days I really try to forget about them while I am on the golf course. Regardless of what route I drive to the golf course, what order I put on my shoes, what short I wear, how many tees I have in my pocket, which pocket I seep my scorecard in or what ball marker I use my success at golf ultimately comes down to the space between my ears. When I really try to relax and forget about everything else, I generally play the best golf. I used to think about a lot of these little things but know I just try to focus on relaxing and having fun and the scores will (sometimes) follow.

OK, I guess I have some more quirks. I carry 3 white tees, a divot tool that has a magnet that holds a Razorback ball marker and a plastic ball marker that can be pushed flush to the putting surface if necessary. These all are in my right pocket. I always put my billfold, car keys and cell phone in a Crown Royal draw sting bag before play and carry two balls in my right pocket which I play one. If I hit a ball in the lake the next ball is handy or if I need to bench my ball that is in play because he is not playing well, the substitute is handy. I do not wear the same golf shoes two days in a row and I will not wear a white belt. A white belt on a 67 year old guy looks crazy IMHO. If you are over 30 or have a waist larger than 36 don't wear a white belt. My golf shoes look like golf shoes and not like I'm going to a track meet. At the end of the round I always remove my cap, shake my playing partners hand and exchange pleasantries.

Not mine, but I played with a guy who would get mad at other players for talking to his ball while it was in the air.  On one particular par three over water with a bunker long, his partner told it to get down - it did, right in the water - the guy went nuts.

My main quirks are Scott Cameron pivot tool in the left pocket, with the "V" shape pointed down toward my leg.  Ball marker in my right pocket.  My boys each got me a ball marker for Father's Day, one which has my name on it, the other "#1 Dad".  I generally alternate each round.

    Vern,

    Great question.

One quirk of mine is I always try to avoid beginning a round with a new ball. I don't know why, but I actually prefer starting with a ball that has some character. The only other quirk I can think of is I have to use a quarter as a ball marker.

Love reading about everyone else's quirks.

These quirks are nice to see. I never take a cart that has a number higher than 75 and I will ask for a different cart if I get one. Never play a higher number ball than 4. If i have been in a slump for a while I will wear the exact same clothes, hat, socks, and belt I shot my lowest round in. Never tee off before a birdie or eagle even if I made one on the last hole played. Never play a found ball those go into the shag bag or my sons bag lol. These are just a few but yes I have many and it is amazing how many times I have shot the number of the cart I am riding in and the day I shot my lowest round 65 I was in cart 65.

I like to use hot pink tees to annoy my buddies and I can only play a 1,2, or 3 ball. 4's go into a shag bag or for use in scrambles. I also wont pick up a ball that is not mine, found it to be bad luck.

    Vern,

First of all congrats TT Spotlight member. Well deserved my friend :) One of my quirks is that I must keep score due to my penmanship being better than average and with that I use an old school four color all-in-one pen. Black for pars and above. Red for Birdies, and the Green and Blue for bets and things. I have to drive when we ride in a cart and all of my clubs are deliberately placed in the same slot next to the same club each and every time. My clubs never get dirty and my always have a glass of Mountain Dew in the cup holder from my favorite waitress in the clubhouse. Those are just a few. Golfers are the best at OCD don't ya think?

Great question and i have a few:

    1)  Always keep 1 tee and ball marker in my right pocket..  always.. if i break a tee, i put one in right away...

    2) I will only hit with a white tee..  Anything else i give away...

    3) When i tee the ball, i place the Titleist logo facing the fairway with nothing showing on top..

    4) When i'm hitting, i do not like people standing directly behind me..  It's like i have 360 vision and can see them..  Tried wearing a hat and it doesn't work

    5) Do not like color golf balls..  If i find one, i either give it away or leave it in the woods..

One of my quirks is to always have a tee in my right pocket. I also "waggle" my club before setting up to the ball to hit a shot. Kind of goofy but oh well.

  29. My sweater always in the left pocket of the bag and the rain cover always on the right pocket.

    Always white tees

Don't like people touching my clubs.

Always bags with 14 way dividers and each club has it's place.

Only like natural wood color tees, any other color will not do.

Divot tool and ball marker in the right front pocket.

When teeing off must have Titleist logo facing the club head in the vertical position.

I wear a specific color for each day of the week. When I decided to do this, the only criteria I had was 1)Red can't be for Sunday 2) Orange can't be for Sunday 3)Try to make the colors blend from one day to the next At first I just matched shirt, hat and towel, then I won a pair of custom FootJoy Contours ... they are blue, so now I also match my shoe and sock color. Thank goodness I found RIT and a good leather dye :) The club pro teased me about wearing matching underwear, so of course I do that now as well. I blame it on my inner OCD!

Golf glove must go in right rear pocket, and never more than one practice swing on a tee box. What's that Doors song.... "People are strange" ? May apply to this topic.

I have to pause at the top of my swing.  I have to have two tees in my right pocket with my ball marker. I have to have my divot repair tool in my left pocket. I always keep my glove in my back right pocket also.  So just a few quirks.

    Great topic buddy!

My biggest quirk is others talking to my golf ball during flight or as it rolls to the hole.  Don't know where it came from but it never seems to work out.  I don't mind if others talk trash, but I try my best not too.  I believe in Karma, and feel like it will always come back to get me. :-)  I always mark my ball with a half dollar, year 1979, and the eyes looking to the hole.

    Thanks,

    B

5 nickels in my left pocket, they used to be dimes, but I needed something bigger, getting old stinks...

I mark my ProV1x with a black sharpie.  Two vertical dots, in the dimples to the right of the "t", always between the "t" and the ProV1 arrows.

Ashamed to say, I got no quirks.  After reading all of this discussion I'm thinking that maybe I need some.  The only thing I always do before I start a swing is I say to myself, You can do this, head steady.  So now I'm in search of a quirk.

Always place a blue dot to the right of the number on my Pro V 1X (throw back to my softball days). I use only high number balls and always, always Pro V 1X's. Divot tool, two tees and a spare ball in my right pocket. Never have or will play a round without my hat clip ball marker with the New York Yankees logo. Unless it's a pro V all found balls are saved until the next water hole then divided to all playing and bets placed on different water games with these.
