I play with a good friend who has a floating " mulligan " system. It can only be used on the 1st and10th hole tees. Then the next time it can be used anywhere only 1 time per round, ect. There is about 8 variations. I don't use Mulli's but was just curious as to see if anybody else runs across this situation. I just let it go , we play just for run and a chance to get together with friends.

Typically, the guys I play with allow a mulligan on the first hole.  We all have young kids, so time is precious.  That means our warm-ups usually consist of a couple of hard swings on the first tee.  We don't play for (much) money and just like to have fun and get together.  So at the end of the day, a mulligan doesn't hurt anyone's feelings.

I play with two different groups. Both allow a mulligan on the first tee and you can play your best ball out of the two. That is it for the rest of the round with one group. The other will allow another mulligan any where on the remaining 17 holes. The first group plays for a small sum of money and the second group that allows a mulligan anywhere does not play for anything but bragging rights. When I play with the second group I sometime will take the first tee mulligan but that is it. Most other foursomes I may occasionally play with usually take a mulligan off the first tee. It is extremely rare that I play with a group that does not allow a mulligan off the first tee.

I've been a bit fortunate the past couple of years in the Mulligans have become non-existent in my groups.

Though I still use the following when I get paired up with "strangers":

When we do the introductions, some players will be a fair bit self deprecating about their abilities. It is usually when I suggest that the most important rule in a social game of golf is that everyone in our group Hass the right to leave the first tee with our dignity intact. This means that if you need a mulligan -- use it! :-)

. I find that this helps "break the ice" and alleviate any undue anxiety from what should be a pleasant social round of golf.

This however, is not the case if it is a tournament or something more formal. :-)

One group at my club gives a mulligan on the 1st tee only. Another gives one only on any tee shot, and still a third gives you one only on any full swing shot. The group I play in gives you NOTHING. When I play a game outside the group, I'll go along with whatever they want to do.

When in practice my coach offers us one mulligan for the first tee jitters.

My group will usually do a breakfast ball off the first tee.  Not unusual too see the mulli-gun rule enforced during a (very) social round.

Mulli-gun:  you need a mulligan? you need to pound a beer to get it.

I play with several groups and they normally do not have mulligans.  I do play with one group that has what they call a "Breakfast Ball."  We usually tee off before 8:30 AM.  In this approach, everyone is entitled to one "Breakfast Ball" if they choose to use it somewhere in their round.  This does help if you happen to just mangle a tee shot somewhere.

Really depends on the group. One says can hit a second ball on 1st tee, but you have to play it. Then I play sometimes with a couple of guys that carry a second ball and if they don't hit a good shot, immediately go to pocket for "the Two Man" . This gets frustrating, but just a friendly game among friends, so nobody really says anything. Only do it when course not crowded and hitting more shots doesn't impact play for other golfers on course.  Practice? I do think the game is one ball, one stroke, play it where it lies and go on. Mulligans on 1st, but that's it.

I'm not big on Mulligans how are you gonna improve when you take a Mulligan on bad shots then post a low score as a result. With that said. I'm OK with the first tee Mulligan especially when the course has no range to warm up . Who can make a good swing right out of the car?

We usually go with one mulligan off the first tee to get through the "jitters".

If I go to a range its usually after a round so no pre-game warmup, I'll do stretches before leaving for the course, then make a few practice swings, tee up and its game on.   I'll usually take a Mulli on the first tee but only if the first was a horrible shot.  The groups that I play with are a mix, some allow mulligans some don't.

I typically only use mulligans when I am playing a casual round with a group of friends, but we only allow one per round. However, if there are any stakes on the line, mulligans are definitely out of the question. When I play more serious rounds with another group of friends, then I personally don't take any mulligans and whether my friends do or don't doesn't bother me. But, if they do, they better not be talking any smack after our round if they beat me.

That would drive me crazy.  I don't use Mulligans.  That helps me to focus on every shot.  I have nothing to fall back on so therefore I have to bear down and work it.  Make sense?
