A Day of Firsts at the Bob Hope Classic

Posted: January 26, 2009

New Pro V1x loyalist Pat Perez.

Pat Perez is the first player to win with the New 2009 Pro V1x.

With a dramatic 6-iron approach from 199 yards away that he hit to three feet and subsequently converted for eagle, Pat Perez won the 50th Bob Hope Classic Hosted by Arnold Palmer. It was the first PGA TOUR title in 198 career starts for the 32-year-old Perez, who relied on the New 2009 Pro V1x for his breakthrough performance. Perez becomes the first player to win with the new model, and the third straight Titleist golf ball loyalist to win through the first three events on the 2009 PGA TOUR schedule. Perez finished the 90-hole tournament at 33-under 327, three shots clear of Titleist Brand Ambassador John Merrick, and five clear of fourth round leader and Titleist Brand Ambassador Steve Stricker and Pro V1 loyalist Mike Weir, as Titleist players secured the top four positions on the leaderboard.

Some Highlights from the 2009 Bob Hope Classic Include:
  • John Merrick's second-place finish was the highest for the 26-year-old, who is beginning his third full season on the TOUR.
  • Steve Stricker established the PGA Tour-record for consecutive low rounds with a 61-62 on Friday-Saturday.
  • Stricker was also 33-under after four rounds, bettering the tour's 72-hole record of 31-under.
  • Ten of the 13 players who finished among the Top 10 and ties relied upon Titleist golf balls for their success.
  • Other Titleist players following Perez, Merrick, Stricker and Weir on the leaderboard include: Titleist Brand Ambassadors Webb Simpson, who tied for fifth place and Tom Pernice who tied for ninth along with John Senden, Richard S. Johnson, Brad Adamonis and Chad Campbell.
  • Webb Simpson's fifth place finish was the rookie's second consecutive Top-10 performance (he finished tied for ninth at last week's Sony Open).

Titleist Golf Clubs Continue Strong Start to PGA Tour Season

Posted: January 22, 2009

In addition to the overwhelming counts in favor of Titleist golf balls, including the New 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x, Titleist golf clubs also continue to gain traction on the 2009 PGA Tour.

At this week's Bob Hope Classic, Titleist is the most played iron brand for the third consecutive week with 38 sets (30%) in play, compared to 29 sets for the nearest competitor. Titleist Vokey Design wedges continue its stronghold in the approach, sand and lob wedge category with 121 in play (44%). The nearest competitor has 46 wedges. Scotty Cameron continues to be the most played putter brand on Tour with 46 players (37%), compared to 27 for the nearest competitor. Two players put the New Studio Select Kombi putters in play. The new Kombi putters will be introduced at next week's PGA Merchandise Show.

Butch Harmon and Nick Watney discuss the features of Titleist 909 drivers and AP2 irons at the Titleist Oceanside Test Facility.

Titleist is second this week in the driver category with 29 in play (23%), including 23 players relying upon the new three-model 909 family. The breakdown by 909 driver is 909D3 (11 players), 909D2 (8 players) and 909DComp (4 players).

Several Titleist Brand Ambassadors are making their 2009 PGA Tour debuts this week at the Hope with new Titleist equipment in the bag. Ben Crane fired a first round 9-under 63, and is in a tie for 4th position after one round. Ben is playing several new pieces of equipment for the first time in competition, including the New 2009 Pro V1x golf ball, new 909D2 (10.5°) driver and a new Scotty Cameron by Titleist Fastback putter. After the first round, Crane was among the Top 20 in Driving Accuracy, hitting 86 percent of the fairways off the tee, tied for 6th in Putts Per Round (25.0) and 9th in Putts per Greens in Regulation (1.467). Click on the video player below to hear what Ben had to say after round one.

Titleist Brand Ambassador Nick Watney is also making his 2009 debut with a brand new bag of Titleist equipment. Watney is playing the New 2009 Pro V1x golf ball, new 909D2 driver (10.5°) and 909F2 fairway metal (15.5°), a new set of Titleist AP2 irons (3-9) and Vokey Design pitching wedge (48°), and a new Scotty Cameron Newport Tour putter - all for the first time in competition. Watney tested the new equipment while working with instructor Butch Harmon at Titleist's Oceanside Test Facility last Friday. Watney fired a first round 6-under 66 with the new equipment.

Front Page News for Titleist at the Bob Hope Classic

Posted: January 22, 2009

Titleist players made quite a splash as the 2009 Bob Hope Classic Hosted by Arnold Palmer got underway yesterday in LaQuinta, California. Upon completion of the first round, the front page of the tournament leaderboard (reserved for those players tied for tenth place and better) was made up exclusively of Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x loyalists.   Earning a spot on the front page of this leaderboard required some extraordinary play - each of the twelve players needed to shoot a score of 64 or lower to break into the Top 10.

Some highlights from LaQuinta include:

- Leader Pat Perez fired an 11-under 61 playing the New 2009 Pro V1x golf ball.

- A total of six players among the Top 10 and ties relied upon the New 2009 Pro V1 or Pro V1x, including:
- Bubba Watson (T2/New Pro V1x)
- Ben Crane (T4/New Pro V1x)
- Jason Dufner (T4/New Pro V1)
- Richard S. Johnson (T4/New Pro V1)
- Chris DiMarco (T10/New Pro V1)

- Titleist was the overwhelming top choice in golf balls at the 2009 Bob Hope Classic with 92 players, or 72 percent of the field, nearly six times the nearest competitor with 16 players.

- Of Titleist's 92 players, 44 have transitioned into the New 2009 Pro V1 or Pro V1x.

-The New 2009 Pro V1x was the most played golf ball in the field with 22 players, followed by the New 2009 Pro V1 with 20 players.

Be sure to check back here and on the Golf Club Leaderboard at Titleist.com for more Titleist equipment success updates throughout the season.

Titleist Brand Ambassadors Zach Johnson and Adam Scott Finish 1-2 at Sony Open

Posted: January 19, 2009

Titleist Brand Ambassador Zach Johnson fired four consecutive rounds in the 60's to edge fellow Titleist Brand Ambassador Adam Scott by two shots at the first full-field event of the 2009 season, the Sony Open in Hawaii. Scott tied for second with Titleist golf ball loyalist David Toms, both of whom trusted the new 2009 Pro V1 for their success.

Johnson closed with a 5-under 65 to finish at 15-under 265 at Waialae, securing his fifth career PGA Tour title. Scott fired a final round 6-under 64, while Toms closed with a 66. Johnson is off to a scorching start this season, finishing 6th at the season-opening, winners-only Mercedes-Benz Championship last week. Statistically, Johnson tied for 3rd in Driving Accuracy with his Titleist 909D2 driver. He also displayed a masterful iron game, thanks in part to the new set of AP2 irons he put in the bag last week at Kapalua. Zach had this to say about the change to his irons:

"(last season) My lower mid-irons were different than my upper irons and now I'm straight AP2s because of the shot and spin rate I'm putting out. It's been fantastic. I think they are a little bit more consistent. I think they are a little bit -- consistent as far as trajectory and spin, which is great. It's just a matter of technology and getting better and better, and certainly Titleist putting the right ball with the right club in my hand, essentially what it comes down to."
