What Can a Rotary Chair Teach You About Ground Reaction Forces?
Believe it or not, at the Titleist Performance Institute one of the favorite tools we use for teaching power in the golf swing is a simple rotary chair.
Unlike traditional power exercises in the gym, this won’t create a physical adaptation, but it can help golfers understand a critical concept and develop a better awareness of how they are pushing against the ground.
Think of this as a drill for developing a feel, rather than an exercise for increasing capacity.
Though most of the focus with ground reaction force is around magnitude, HOW (timing and direction) we teach a golfer to push can be just as important as HOW HARD they are pushing.
The progression demonstrated by Dr. Rose in this video highlights how the best golfers in the world interact with the ground to generate rotary speed efficiently.
Not only can this be a meaningful contributor to clubhead speed, it can also help improve swing mechanics such as maintaining dynamic posture, clearing the lead hip and covering the ball at impact.
