Two-Ball Chipping Game

To make practice productive in golf, it helps to make it fun and in this video, Titleist staff member Justin Parsons shares a drill that does both.

Two Ball, Worst Ball is a practice game that will test your powers of concentration and force you to experiment with many different types of finesse shots around the green. And because you keep score, Two Ball, Worst Ball introduces an element of anxiety, adding to the challenge and helping you to develop the valuable skill of performing under pressure.

To play:

  • Get eight (8) practice golf balls (Justin highly recommends that you use the same golf ball model that you play on the course).
  • Pick out four random targets on the practice green (cups, putting discs, golf tees, etc.)
  • Play one shot to each of the four targets. The goal is for each golf ball to finish within a five-foot radius of the target. This distance of five feet is significant because on the PGA Tour, statistics show that players will sink nearly every putt inside five feet. Outside of five feet, their success rates drop substantially.
  • Play one additional shot to each of the four targets.
  • At each target, note the distance from the target, in feet, of your WORST ball – the ball farthest from the target.
  • Add up each individual WORST ball distance for your grand total score. If your total distance falls under 20 feet (4 targets x 5 feet), you win! If your total distance exceeds twenty feet, pick a different location around the green and try again.

As you progress, make the game more challenging. Select more difficult targets, play from tougher lies and even lower the target score a foot at a time down from 20. It's also a great game to play competitively, against other golfing buddies. It's a fun way to make practice more like real play and your short game will improve dramatically.
