51 years playing golf and FINALLY a hole in 1
By RGrover On May 13, 2016
I started playing golf at 6 years old. I turned 57 on May 6, 2016 and had my first hole in one on May 7! Happy birthday to me!! It was on hole #8 at Bridlewood Golf Course in Flower Mound, TX and I was playing a match play tournament (Three 6-hole matches format) . The hole was playing 190 yards with a very gusty wind but a "helping" wind out of the south. The hole has water from the tee box to the front and left side of the green and there is a sand trap "protecting" part of the front of the green and most of the left side of the green. It was 170 yards to clear the back edge of the trap on the front part of the green so I hit an 8 iron with a slight draw. It was a picture perfect shot with the ball landing about 5 yards in front of the pin, hopped a couple times and then rolled towards the pin. I started walking towards the cart and just happened to look over my shoulder to watch the ball roll into the hole. After a lot of high 5's and loud shouts of joy that interrupted the group on the 7th green and the group on the 9th tee box it occurred to me that I am playing in a tournament with 36 guys who like to drink!! I don't know who started the tradition of "the guy hitting the hole in one has to buy" but at that point in time I didn't care! The excitement and joy of making my first hole in one was all that mattered!! PS: I had my first and only double eagle (2 on par 5) at age 55 during an individual match play round.
