A Swing And A Miss

I have been playing golf for 10 years and was just closing in on my 63rd birthday. Have never hit a hole-in-one before, nor have I ever even seen one in person. I was playing Saturday golf in early February with a few of my golf buddies at my home course, Westchester in Los Angeles, situated just north of the LAX International Airport. Hole #4 was a simple 135-yard affair with no hazards or obstructions or problems in the way. All you had to do was hit it straight for 135 and you were on; I have done this countless times. Today, however, something was off and I mishit my shot so that I topped it and sent a grounder up the fairway. My first thought was that it had entirely too much steam on it, and I was concerned that the ball would roll up the green and off the top. I stood there chanting, "slow down, slow down" as it approached the green, on a line that was left of the pin. When the ball hit the bottom of the green, it suddenly and mysteriously took what seemed like a 45 degree turn toward the pin and rolled right into the cup, with the pin in place, of course. The speed of the rolling ball turned out to be just perfect for getting into the cup with hitting the pin itself. My buddies and I looked at each other in amazement, not believing what we just saw. Sometime the mishits turn out to be OK, I guess.
