Big O - Hole in 1

Big O - Hole in 1

Setting - Late January around 3pm. Oakdale Golf and Country Club located in Oakdale CA. A quiet farming community right between the Bay Area and Yosemite as you go East/West and in between Sacramento and Fresno as you go North/South. I was playing with the Friday afternoon group. My group was the 2nd of 4 to tee off at 12:34pm. By my side and in my cart was "Wolfy" while the second cart was occupied by Ordained Minister V. Porter and the finest Food Distributor/Entrepeneur J. DeBoer. We played a simple game of skins and had about 20 golfers that afternoon. We made our way around the course at a brisk pace not pushing anyone and nobody pushing us. We made the turn after hole 9 and picked up some refreshments at the bar window. My performance to that point was usual, mostly bogeys, a par here and there, and a few blowup holes. As we arrived at the 16th hole J DeBoer pulled out his scope and said in a matter of fact tone "135 to the pin". I shuffled through my bag, grabbed my 8 iron and gave it a quick wipe down with the towel. Wolfy beat me to tee box and hit a horrible shot right in the small pond guarding the green. The pond makes up most of the distance of the hole and can be intimidating at times depending on the position of the tee box markers. I pulled my Titleist ProV1x out of my pocket and gave it a quick exam to make sure it was clean and had my signature "O" mark around the number. I pushed the tee into the ground leaving less than 1/2 inch between the ball and the grass. I made a few practice swings then addressed the ball. I have a natural fade (sounds better than saying I don't swing good) so I took a line about 5 yards right of the pin. Full swing because I'm a high ball hitter. Landed within a yard of the flag with a small bounce and forward role....BAM!!! Did I do it? I wasn't sure. I wasn't convinced that it had happened. The ball was probably just in front or just behind the flag and as far as I was concerned it could have been 10 feet away and I was most likely looking at a 2 putt par. J. DeBoer pulled his scope out to take a peek, turned his head looked me in the eyes and then with his right index finger made small swooping downward motion indicating "It's in the hole". I approached the hole and found that my Titleist ProV1x with the big "O" mark was indeed resting quietly at the bottom of the cup almost smiling at me. I bent down and grabbed the Titleist ProV1x showed it to my partners and then I did some sort of awkward high knee/pulled my arms in to my chest (like the reception sign a referee gives in football) and yelled "Ace baby!). The 19th hole that day was a blast as I was congratulated, hugged, and high fived by my friends and fellow members. Yes, I had a pretty big bar bill that day but it was definitely worth it. Can't wait for my next one.
