First Hole In One Was a Dunk

It was Friday, September 23rd, 2011, the weekend of my wedding.

My friend Joey Mashburn, who turned me onto golf and actually gave me the clubs I use today, was playing golf with me on Friday because he couldn't make the Saturday or Sunday tee times. He shoots in the 80's and I have yet to break 100 on a 72-par course. Legacy on Lanier (Lake Lanier Islands, Gainsville, Georgia) is a challenging course, to say the least, and we were playing from the blue tees.

On Hole #5, I had been given the go-ahead to tee off so Joey could light a cigar. The pin was near the front of the green and measured in at 101 yards (Joey had a Bushnell and measured it at 102 yards). I didn't want to hit my 54 (bent to 53) full swing, so I chose to go 3/4 swing with my PW. I had been practicing this shot for some time and wanted to put it to use. Also, about 4 weeks prior to this golf outing, I found a Pro V1 while searching for my lost ball. I used it since I couldn't find my own ball. I hit the shot that day and I saw the ball check up on the green. I will never forget that feeling. I can't even play a "non-Pro V1" any longer. The days of the cut-proof covers are over! I've already purchased over 100 used Pro V1s and use them every time.

Anyway, I teed up my Pro V1 at #5 at Legacy, pulled back 3/4 of the way, and pulled the trigger. The rest is history. It went straight in. I saw the ball disappear and then heard the "PING" of the flagstick. I really couldn't even believe it at first. Then it set in and I was elated! Thankfully, my buddy Joey knew to sign the scorecard to make it official. It was a great day.

At my wedding that upcoming Sunday (September 25), as I was giving my public thanks to everyone who attended the wedding, I said, "And lastly I want to thank my new wife. I love you, baby. And other than the Hole-In-One that I hit on Friday, you're the best thing that ever happened to me."

I'll never live that one down!!! Thanks, Titleist!!! Couldn't have done it without you!!!
