Playing as a two some with my friend Jack Geiger, the day broke with bright sunshine and light wind for our 8:18am tee time at Lochmere Country Club in Tilton,NH. The third hole has an elevated green with "Lochmere" landscaped on the hill in back. Pin placement was in the back at 154 yards that day.
Jack, a former scratch golfer in high school, had the honors and fired a 7 iron across the valley landing pin-high on the green fringe. I hit a relatively low 6 iron landing on the front edge of the green, not what I was trying to do; frankly it was a miss-hit. The ball ran straight to the pin and disappeared, since the green sloped down in the back.
Jack quipped, "That could be a hole in one!" and "Maybe you should tee up all your shots in the fairway." I mumbled something about a by-product of cattle raising.
On arriving at the green, no ball was to be seen; poet
but don't know it. Jack went straight to the pin, looked down and extended his right index and middle fingers into the cup. just like the pros do on TV. Personally, I thought this was just another gaff from my low-handicap pal. However, wedged between his fingers was my titleist, much to both of our amazement.
To quote Hall-of-Famer, GP, "Practice increases your luck." G., I have been practicing, but right now, I am just lucky!
