Visiting from Garland, TX to play the first of five days in my friend Sam's annual Colorado Golf Binge, I had just finished telling my foursome the story of how I thought I had made my first hole in one on hole #3 at Fossill Trace GC in Golden, CO, when I played it with Sam eight years ago. It's an uphill, bowled green, where only the top of the pin is visible, and I had hit it directly at the pin, while Sam had hit his shot 60 feet to the right of the pin. Driving up to the green, we saw a single ball on the green, three feet behind the pin, and thought the other ball might be in the hole. Assuming I had just made my first hole in one, I was crushed to discover it was Sam's errant shot that had rolled down the steep slope from off the green and into the hole for his second career hole in one. After everyone agreed that golf is not fair, we tee'd off on the par 3, hole #5 at Fossil Trace, where I hit my Titleist Pro V1 with a gap wedge that went 105 yards and into the hole! While this shot won me money for that day's closest to the pin competition, a skin, and longest putt or chip made for the week, it didn't cover my obligatory bar tab for drinks for our two foursomes! However, I was particularly pleased to see that my shot also replaced Sam's name on the closest to the pin marker. Finally, eight years later, justice at Fossil Trace!
