Scot's first ace
By Scot F On July 28, 2017
I was planning to play nine holes alone at Roses Run Country Club, where I work part time, on Wednesday, July 26, 2017. When I was on the tee I met two guys, Dale and Steve, who were also planning to play alone, so we decided to play together. It turned out to be a fortuitous meeting for me. It started out as a good round with a birdie on No. 1 and a bogey on No. 2 before I dunked two balls in the water on No. 3, a par 3, and made an 8. I rebounded with two bogeys and a par before going to No. 7, a 135-yard par 3 over water to a two-tiered green that slopes back to front. The pin was on the top tier, about 15 feet from the back of the green. I hit a 9-iron and struck it well. The ball landed a few inches from the back of the green and trickled back down the hill and into the hole. I saw it tracking toward the hole and thought I heard it hit the pin before going in but I didn't actually see it drop. I asked Dale if it went in and he said he thought it might have stopped behind the pin, so I didn't know for sure that it was an ace until we got up next to the green and there was no ball behind the hole. I walked up and was so excited to see the ball in the hole. I was so pumped up that I forgot to take the ball out of play and actually hit it over water on the 8th tee. I was standing over the ball about to hit my second shot when I realized I needed to save the ball for posterity! Good thing, too, because I hit my second shot into a green-side pond while trying to reach a par 5 in two on No. 8! I am 56 years old and have been playing golf regularly since I was 9. I played a lot as a kid and on the golf team in high school and was starting to think I was never going to cross making a hole in one off my bucket list. What a great feeling!
