Brad Faxon’s 909DComp Fitting Increases Distance and Forgiveness

Titleist Brand Ambassador Brad Faxon

Titleist Brand Ambassador Brad Faxon was fit for his 909 Driver by Titleist PGA Tour Representative Fordie Pitts. Having three driver models with unique performance characteristics allowed Fax to select a driver that provides exceptional looks, feel, and sound while improving his launch conditions.

"Brad was looking for a driver that produced longer distance and straighter drives," Fordie said. "The 909DComp's full-pear profile and 460cc head looks great. The titanium and composite construction creates a lower and deeper CG for reduced spin, higher launch, and longer, straighter drives. It was a home run for Brad."

Brad added, "I like the 909DComp driver because it looks, feels, and sounds great. I want more distance like everyone else, but keeping the ball in the fairway is just as important. My 909DComp does both."

See a summary of Fax's before and after launch conditions below:

ah it worked for bob let me give it a try. I too would like to send brad something. When i was five years old you came to button hole and said, "ok, ill sign your hat if you sign mine" that made me so happy and excited. I still have the pictures and autographed golf balls. Even though i moved to virginia i was sure to bring those items  as they mean the world to me. I am now twelve years old and if u get to read this, i was wondering if i could meet u again. I would greatly appriciate it as you are my favorite golfer not just for your skills on the course, but for what you have done to help kids like me follow their dream.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          sincerely,                                                                                                                                                                              Chad McCann

These are great and showcase the new 909 series!  Tour players do like to hit the ball lower than most.

Thank you for responding so quickly.  My aunt in Swansea, Mass. will be so pleased.  One more thing for you, as I know that you need to spend time with your wife and children.  My mother's side is from Killeen Castle, Ireland.  I believe the Solheim Cup is playing there in 2011.  My great, great grandfather is buried next to the Castle, now a golf course.  I would like to get my aunt a sweatshirt with the LPGA logo and Killeen Castle.  My mother was very proud of her up-bringing in Swansea - "Bungtown".  If you can help tracking down that sweatshirt, I'll be sure to donate to the kids for the CVS Tourney.  Thanks for your time and Good Swinging! Bob Phillips.

We passed your comment on to Fax who sent this to

I do remember meeting you, I hope you enjoyed the Shootout as much as I did.  Please send my best to your Aunt, and thanks to you both for all of the support.

Just wanted to connect with Brad Faxon.  I'm two years his junior and asked for his autograph coming off the 17th green during the final round of the Merrill Lynch Shootout here in Naples, Florida.  The autograph was for my aunt in Swansea, Mass. who loves to root for Brad and Billy when they play.  Nice man, signed the playbook to send to my auntie.  She goes to the CVS tourney when she can. Can I e-mail him this.  Bob Phillips (Naples, Florida).  Mother Paula Deubel Phillips, 1956 Olympian Shotput, RI Hall of Fame member, native Swansea, Mass. Thanks.

Very cool posts recently about your clubfitting success.   As a fan, this is the "behind the scenes stuff" we are looking for!  How about mixing in some fairways and hybrid fittings?  Maybe a good wedge fitting story too.

Really appreciate the fine work you guys do.

Ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate are definitely three attributes that we attempt to optimize when we fit a player into a driver.  One of the variables that influences movement in these attributes, though, is the shaft and its characteristics.  Knowing a shaft's weight, bend profile, torque, etc. and understanding how it interacts with the other variable factors (length, loft, lie, etc.) is an essential skill for a good clubfitter.

I caddied for Mr. Faxon during the summer at R.I.C.C. and he was using the 909D2. Why did he make the switch?

  9. Robert Sellman

909DComp was not available for testing until after the summer, so he was likely working with the 909D2 in the meantime.  As you can see from the launch numbers above, he is making good use of the 909DComp.

Since there isn't really a standard in the golf industry for flex (i.e., one manufacturer's "X" may play totally differently than another's), is the measured frequency of a driver's shaft ever used to determine what is best for a particular golfer's driver?  Or are ball speed, launch angle and spin rate the three attributes that you are really trying to match up or improve on when doing a driver fitting?
