Member Spotlight: Memphisunited (scottm6)

In this edition of our Team Titleist Member Spotlight, we're excited to check in with Scott M., who frequenters of the Team Titleist discussion boards will better recognize as "memphisunited."

A Titleist enthusiast and one of Team Titleist's most active members, Scott admits that " has not been good for my productivity in other areas" – for which we apologize. (Kind of.)

Like most of us, Scott is constantly working on his game whenever he can. His current focus: "My iron play," he says. "I need to hit more greens."

Scott says the new My Game section on Team Titleist has been a big asset in analyzing his key stats (i.e., Green in Regulation) and knowing where to focus his practice time.

And we're pretty sure he'll be ready to go once he steps to the first tee at Pebble Beach...

Check out the Q&A below to find out more...

TEAM TITLEIST: How did you get started in golf? Who introduced you to the game?

SCOTT M.: I got started at around 10- or 11-years-old.  I liked watching golf on TV (yes, weird for a 10-year-old).  My dad got me a set of clubs and I took lessons at my uncle’s club. From there, I played a lot in the summers when I wasn’t playing other sports.

TT: What's your best score and where did you shoot it?

SM: My best score is a 2-under 68 at The Links at Galloway in Memphis.

TT: Can you recall the best golf shot you've ever hit?

SM: The best shot I ever hit was probably in a local tournament.  I was behind a tree and had to chip my second shot out on a par 4.  My third shot was about 100 yards and I holed it for birdie. That was a my best shot due to the situation.

TT: What's the most special moment you've ever had on the golf course?

SM: I was playing with some friends in high school and we were trying to finish our round before the sun went down. On 17, we hit our tee shots into the par 3. I could see my ball above the tree line but didn’t see it once it came down because it was dark.  When we got to the green we couldn’t find my ball, so one of my friends took a look in the cup. It was there – just wish I had seen it go in the hole.

TT: What's the best piece of golf advice you have ever received?

SM: Probably “play ready golf.” I don’t like slow play and that was something I was taught when I first hit the course as a kid. Not everyone is good at golf, but everyone can be fast at golf.

TT: What's your favorite Titleist club in the bag?

SM: My favorite club is my Tour model Scotty Cameron Newport. I picked it up in a trade a couple of years ago and it’s been in the bag ever since. At some point, I need to send it to Scotty's Custom Shop for a new finish, but I don’t know if I could be without it for a month. It’s got a great feel to it.

How do you mark your Titleist golf ball? Does it have any special significance?

SM: I usually mark it with blue dots. One for each person in my immediate family. I usually need my entire family’s luck when I’m on the course.

TT: If you had to play one golf course every day for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

SM: That’s a tough question. If you are talking “dream” scenario, then I’d have to say Pebble Beach. I’ve never played it, but it looks great and how could you go wrong with seeing those amazing views every day?

TT: How did you hear about Team Titleist? What are some of your favorite features of the community and what kind of things would you like to see in the future?

SM: I was browsing for something and saw the Team Titleist section. I decided to sign up and give it a try. I really like the blogs and the slideshows. It’s great to see updates from the tour and insights into the new products coming out from Titleist. The My Game section on Team Titleist has been great for analyzing my game. I would really like to see have an online shop with branded merchandise.

Do you consider yourself a tinkerer? How often do you change equipment?

SM: I try not to change equipment too often because it could get really expensive, but I find myself trading and picking up clubs here or there. I’m always looking for something to try including clubs, shafts, grips, etc. I blame Titleist for coming out with great new products each year. I hit the 909D2 really well, but I’m going to have to try the 910 at some point. You have to upgrade, right?

 TT: Favorite golf movie?

SM: “Caddyshack.”

TT: Favorite golf book?

SM: "Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf.

TT: Favorite 19th hole meal?

SM: A moderate amount of barley and hops is usually good after a hot day on the course.

TT: Favorite golf destination?

SM: The Destin/Fort Walton, Fla., area has a lot of great courses – and the beaches are nice, too.

TT: Do you have any on-course superstitions?

SM: Yeah, I play in several two-man tournaments every year. I have an old Titleist Ryder Cup ball marker that came with a dozen balls back in the late '90s. I always use that marker in team events.
