Angela Stanford Claims a Major First at The Evian Championship

Angela Stanford celebrating win

Angela Stanford (Pro V1) ended her long wait for a first major title this weekend, winning the year's final major, the Evian Championship in the French Alps.

Stanford got off to a slow start at Evian Resort Golf Club, shooting 1-over 72 in the opening round. But typical of the tenacious spirit she's exhibited throughout her 18-year LPGA career, the 40-year old charged back with rounds of 64-68-68 to post a 12-under 272 total, one stroke clear of fellow Titleist golf ball players Amy Olson (Pro V1), Mo Martin (Pro V1) and Sei Young Kim (Pro V1) and Austin Ernst (Pro V1).

Stanford began the day five shots off the lead, but coming down the stretch she eagled the 15th and added a birdie on No. 17 to erase the deficit.

“I know me very well,” said an emotional Stanford. “Deep down I’m a fighter, I’m a grinder, and I’ve always been that. I just kept telling myself, ‘You just got to be who you are.’ ”

With the win, the former Solheim Cup standout becomes the second-oldest player in LPGA history to win her first major, behind Fay Crocker, who won the 1955 U.S. Women’s Open at 40 years, 11 months. Stanford turns 41 on Nov. 28.

This win is the sixth of her career, with her last victory coming in 2012.

Stanford also kept alive the current streak of an American winning at least one major every year since the Evian Championship became the LPGA’s fifth major in 2013.

Congratulations, Angela!
