Marking Golf Balls to Hole More Putts | Team Titleist

On the greens, aiming properly is only half the battle when it comes to making putts. The putter face also needs to be square at impact in order to get the ball rolling on your intended line. In this tip, Titleist Staff Member Michael Breed shows how drawing a line on your golf ball that is perpendicular to the sidestamp will help you to do just that.

Marking the Ball

Michael Breed’s key to marking the golf ball is to orient the alignment line you draw on the ball parallel with the putter face instead of aimed toward the hole. When the mark on the ball is drawn at a 90-degree angle from the side stamp it allows golfers to use the side stamp to aim at the hole. Then utilize the line marking, which will be parallel to the putter face, to ensure even impact through the ball to sink the putt.

3 Steps to Hole More Puts:

  • Mark your golf ball with a line perpendicular to the side stamp
  • Use the side stamp to line up your putt with the hole
  • Set the line you’ve drawn around the ball parallel to the putter face
  • Use the parallel line and putter face to make square impact through the ball to its target
