I prefer #2 since its a great number in Golf, birdies, eagles and albatross. I also mark 1 dot on each side of number, the line on the white part of ball.

I'm sure when he mentioned "compressing" the ball, he meant compressing it into the putting surface and not actually compressing the ball itself.  Was any of this done on real greens as opposed to what looked like a very hard carpet surface…
