  1. Hello

Today on the course my friend found an Acushnet Club Special ball #4 in good shape.

Any idea how old it might be?

I remember playing the Club Special back in the early- to mid-70's.  Used to cost $.65 when the "real" Titleist cost $1.25!

I was looking through my golf balls and I found a club special 2. It looks so old I looked it up and found your posting. Mine looks much older than yours. I'm thinking early 60s also. I'll try to attach a picture.

    great find!!!!

  6. Yes, 65 cents a piece; women played them but I played them as a 12 year old. My wife found them new as late as the mid 1980s. Spaulding had proflites $.50, Kroflites $1.00 and their top ball was the Black Dot (they also had a Red Dot).MacGregor had the DX Tourney at the top and the Jack Nicklaus ball was $.75; Maxfli by Dunlop was a premier ball also in the day

If I had to guess, I would have to say late 60's to early 70's

Boy that looks awful good for a ball that I'm pretty sure hasn't been around since the 60's MAYBE very early 70's.  I (vaguely) remember the from my days as a "yute" when I just was learning the game as and 11 or 12 year old.  Maybe the Smithsonian would check it to see if it has "fossil" status.

I remember my father played these. We played every weekend together starting when I was about 6 yrs old,  which would be 1971.  I recall these at least up through the mid to late 70's.

    Great find!

The last time I saw the Club Special was in the early 80's. The one pictured is in very good shape and must have kept in the box until recently.

  12. Very Nice Artifact!

  13. I played them when I was on the high school golf team in 1976,77,78

Nice find.  Played them in the 60's and early 70's.  It was a great ball.  Today's clubs probably couldn't keep it airborne.

  15. I used these balls in the early to mid 60's. I found one today that seems to have a cut proof cover, unlike the ones I used to use.
  16. My estimate is the earliest Club Special's arrived on the scene in the late 50's to at the least early 60's. Note the way the oldest ones have a number above and below the logo signifying the possibility of a pre 60's ball. Hopefully included is a pic of one of my Club Special's along with another collectable... a "British ball" that slips through my orange ball retriever too! Been an avid ball collector my entire life and have a one of a kind collection like I'm sure you do too.

Heard that they were an awesome winter golf ball....low compression, when there was such a thing......
  21. Nice! I also have one but it is not the club version. Just Acushnet.

I played my first round of golf in June 1968 at the age of 13. In the pro shop, Club Specials sold for 35 cents each or a sleeve of three for $1.00. The packaging was a light blue color. They were low compression and a great ball. Thanks for reviving some great memories.

I was just talking about the Club Special with an old friend and the next day I found one in the middle of the fairway in excellent condition. It is now on display with my other memento golf balls.

I started playing golf in 1962 and the first balls I played were Club Specials. Later that year, I switched to Titleist and I’ve been playing them exclusively ever since. 59 years!

Great find, hadn't seen those in ages.

I had some of those when I started in Jr Golf back in 1973, used them once in awhile prior to high school golf along with the old Spaulding Eagle balls. Then in high school my coach introduced the team to Titleist DT 90's and the rest is history as they say. Lol

  26. Almost tens years from the original post, I've found an Acushnet Club Special and I search the web for details and end up here. Thanks to all for the info, I'll post a pic of this one when I figure out how to post pics. Maybe someone can tell me the process!

Congrats on your find. The picture link was taken down a while back, probably because of the file size storage issue on these threads. You have to use the social media link or only post pictures when starting a new topic. You can always post it on the Team Titleist Group on Facebook. Much easier to post and review pictures on that site. Cheers!
  28. Ok great, thanks Dale V! I will check out the Facebook Group.
