  1. TT, what is your opinion on forgiveness and overall playability of AP1 718 vs 818 H1. Please, I really seek answers only on AP1 vs H1, or maybe general Game Improvement Iron vs Hybrid. It is clear that hybrids are for vast majority golfers easier to play than MBs, CBs, AP2 and perhaps also AP3, this is out of discussion.

However, when it comes to AP1, it is more complex. I read AP1 is great from rough, like H1. It is very forgiving, like H1. It has large head, wider sole, bigger sweetspot, like H1. AP1 is easy to play high. I heard opinions, that it is easier to play it than hybrids, but also contradictory opinions, that hybrid is more easy to play. Reading some general comparisions (hard data based) of hybrids vs long irons, there is not much difference on well hit shots, and ok hit shots, just long iron is easier to hit very bad.

    Your personal experience? Your opinions?

The primary determinant is launch angle. Driver head speed under 90 can result in not getting enough height, and a resultant loss of distance. Hybrids are that solution. At slower speeds, even a 5 and a 6 iron are suspect. If you have enough speed, a 4 iron is suitable. The AP1 will work better than an AP2 or CB, but not as well as a hybrid. It's individual based on preference and results.

Peter, I am in the same exact situation. Longest iron I play is a 5 iron and hit it to around 172 on a consistent basis, I play to a 4 handicap!!

I bought a 23 and 19 degree 816 hybrid and I am so inconsistent with them...left, right, left, right..so frustrating!! Thinking about trying a Tmb 4 iron to fit that 185 distance and be more consistent from an accuracy standpoint!!

I have thought about an AP3, but the reason for their longer distance compared to the AP2 is because they are anywhere from 2 to 3 degrees stronger which is about a club further in distance!! I would have to bend it to 24 to stay consistent with my Ap2 instead of it being at 22, almost a typical 3 iron at 21!! Good luck!!
  4. Thanks for feedbacks so far! I am a bogey golfer, with 95-100 Driver SS, and as I do not play often my main issue is inconsistency. I have an old set of irons cally X20 Tour (proxy AP3) and on a good day I can hit 4i ok from turf even with low/med flight shaft. I want to certainly buy more forgiving irons (AP1), but at the moment I do not play hybrids and in past (7+ years) I had mixed results with them... happy to see more your experience of 4i AP1 vs 23deg H1...
  5. The hybrid will launch easier, but may have more left/right dispersion. I found the 6 iron is the longest in the 718 AP1 set that gapped properly for me (82 MPH 7 iron measured by Trackman @ Titleist Thursday). I use a 25* lofted up to 27* 816 H1 hybrid to replace the 5 iron.
