I am recuperating from arthroscopic surgery from a bone spur removal, trimming of the labrum and bicep tendon. I had been playing for almost two years with a chronic sore right shoulder thinking that I just had a muscle strain. A tremendous loss of distance in the last couple of months due to weakness in my right arm and shoulder led me to an orthopedic surgeon who could help me with my problem. Not that golf caused the bone spur but I started thinking of all the injuries that I have had that are related to golf or that I have had that has caused me pain while playing or to actually stop playing until I recovered. Here is my list. Tennis elbow in both arms, lower back strain, ankle sprain, pulled rib cage muscle, plantar fasciitis in left foot, fire ant stings, bee stings, cactus punctures and dizziness from heat. Also had a pace maker implanted that set my game back about 6 weeks twenty one years ago (on 3'rd pace maker). What is your list ?

I have had spine surgery, L5-S1 seven years ago.  I also, have a pop in my right shoulder when I swing.  It usually only pops 1 time, then the next swing it doesn't, usually.  If it does pop on a full swing, it is really ugly, a whiff, latteral, thin, really fat, could be any of them.  I always take a slow full practice swing which makes it pop, so it doesn't usually do so when I actually try to hit the ball.  My back is pretty good now, Dr. suggested I quit golfing, in which I told him, that wasn't going to to happen.  So, I always stretch it out, daily, whether golfing or not.  Other than the golfing, I really avoid any kind of extra strain put on it.  I'm sure as I get older my list will rise.

I have suffered from golfers elbow and in lieu of resting I take cortisone injections. I also had a small tear in my forearm muscle. The elbow injury limits my distance a lot when it begins to hurt and limits my right arm action.

I have been having issues with my back for the last few years.  I have put on WAY too much weight and am a good 60-70 pounds over my "Athletic" playing weight and trying to lose about 30-50 pounds as an end goal.  My back will pop when I try to really go after a swing like a big driver and therefore I have started to swing more smoothly now while I am trying to lose.  When my back does act up, I am very sympathetic to what Tiger deals with during his injuries the last few years.  You feel like you can't even move and just the whole lower back tightens up.  This has helped my ball striking and saved my back.  I am trying to make sure there is no long term effects and do not want any long term damage.

The one thing I love about golf is it could be played for all of your life as long as you have your health and I need to make sure I do my part now.

I am working on preventative maintenance as well: planks, stretching, better posture while sitting, and some stretching I found on YouTube from TPI instructors which has really helped and have not had an issue on the course in about 9 months.

Best of luck to all with all that ails you!!

Carl, in my experience, almost all injuries can be prevented.

Strength training and stretching are the absolute necessities.  Especially as we age.

The old adage is true.  Pay now or pay later.

I've been sidelined for excruciating long periods of time until I learned these hard and fast lessons.

Not only does working out and stretching prevent injuries, you feel better and look great.

    Good luck.

It all started at about age 15 back in the 60's playing a 9 holer with sand greens, reached into the cup to get my ball and cut open my middle finger on a chunk of busted beer bottle that I didn't see when I pulled the flag out. Caddied for a couple summers while in college, hit by slung clubs several times, nice bruisers, good for a better tip. In my 30's started to get occasional back aches. In my 40's I'd get back aches along with my legs going numb. I've been hit three times by a golf ball, twice on the right cheek of my rear end, ever seen a bruise with golf ball dimples that are black on a circle of purple? The last hit was on the shoulder and was pretty painful. Of those three hits not one of the golfer yelled fore or anything else. Hit a ball into the rough on the first hole, followed with a sensational shot to the green, stepped back and into a groundhog hole, my leg turned black, I was dizzy off and on, chills then sweats, but I finished the game then drove three hours to get home, then went to the hospital, they said I was in shock, got some real good pain killers with that one. Bee stings every now and then. The last injury was a hernia, which I can only blame on golf since I don't often lift stuff, it never really bothered me so I played several years with it. Was waiting out a storm in a shelter when we saw a bolt of lightning come up the fairway running just above the ground, another 25 yards and there would have been four casualties. I've probably left a few out, senior moment brought about by golf.
