Does one have to be able to pass a TPI evaluation to be fit effectively for irons? I ask because it seems local TPI certified instructors insist on an evaluation first, then weeks of TPI workouts before getting to instruction or fitting. I am pretty good fitness-wise but was not able to do a full squat with a club over my head. Thus, I was given a TPI workout which has improved my abilities but as a Senior I am not sure I will ever be able to be as fit as a PGA Tour player. Any thoughts?

  2. I would echo the same question but for a younger person in their 30's or 40's.... just curious, good question.

The ideal situation that will give you the best chance to play your best golf would using the eval and prescribed exercises for 4-6 weeks.  Assuming there are no injuries that are limiting you then after that time you will be able to make your best swings.Follow that up with some lessons to get your swing where you want it and then get custom fit.  That would be ideal assuming you have the time to do that and that is your overall objective.  Preferrably all of that is done by the same golf professional.

However, if you say" I just want to get some fitted clubs , I don't have time or the desire to go through all that" then you can get a custom  fitting  anytime.  A good golf professional that is well trained will know how to do that even though you have some limitations in your flexibility.

It all really depends on you, your goals and time committment.  IF AT ALL POSSIBLE DO THE IDEAL SITUATION I STARTED OUT WITH ABOVE.   The TPI eval and exercises are life changing, no matter your age.  I have included a link from my web page that has a letter (-his letter is at the bottom of the web  page...-) from one of my students.  He was 69 years old at the time and had some serious shoulder issues and overall flexibility issues. At the start of our lessons / TPI curriculum his tee shots were about 140 yards.  A few months later he was carrying the ball 170 !  Before his workouts / lessons he would probably shoot around 110.  Earlier this season he shot 38 for 9 holes !!

I  agree with you.  The implication is that all of the thousands of individuals who were fitted by a golf professional  and did not participate in a TPI course before hand were improperly fitted.  The most consistent thing I notice about TPI courses and instructors is that they are constantly pushing their  product.  Implying that only  their courses and instructors are competent enough to teach or instruct or fit individuals for golf.

My question to you Timothy j is, If you are uncomfortable with the pressure and TPI's  insistence, why don't you go to another    fitter?  Contrary to TPI's comments, there are plenty of highly  qualified golf professionals who can and will properly fit you.
