Wedge shafts

  1. Hi guys,

I am currently playing a set of AP2s with Nippon 970 Stiff shafts 1/4 inch longer and 2 degrees upright. I have an average swing speed with a smooth tempo and my 6 iron carry distance is around 164yds (ballspeed 110mph+). I am looking to get Vokey SM4 wedges in 52, 56, and 60 degrees lofts. I am thinking of getting regular flex and slightly heavier shafts for the 56 and 60 deg wedges to increase the spin rate for less than full shots and the heavier shafts should help a bit with control. What are your thoughts regarding the Dynalite Gold XP shafts in a regular flex? Will there be significant differences in swingweight? Are there any other shafts that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    Regards

    Andrew

I would highly recommend the Vokey wedge shaft, also known as the s200. The KBS Hi Rev shaft is also a new shaft worthy of consideration. RC

I agree with Ryan on the wedge shaft - to quote the great engine builder, Smokey Yunick (the author of "How to Hot Rod Small Block Chevys"), "Happiness is a stock cam." (the reason was too many street machine enthusiasts put in race cams to find out the driveability of the car is horrible). Happiness is a stock shaft on the wedges for me. The "however" is that the lie angles of the wedges should fall in line with the rest of the clubs for length and lie. Generally the GW and SW should be 1/2* more upright vs the 9 iron and the LW/XW should be 1* more upright (assuming your 9 iron is 36" with a lie angle of 66*, the GW is 35.5, the SW is 35.25 and the LW/XW is 35") - this works for me; also note there may be a bunch of opinions on adjusting wedges.

What about the True Temper SPinner shafts?  Do you have any feedback on those?

  5. Andrew,

I went through the same issue.  I got fitted for irons (JPX 800 Pro)/woods (Titleist) from a advanced fitting center and the wedge suggestion for me was to keep the same shaft in my irons for my 50 degree vokey wedge (KBS tour X soft stepped) since I take a normal iron swing with, 1 flex less in my 56 degree Vokey bent to 55 (kbs tour Stiff) and 60 degree (kbs tour Stiff).

All of my other clubs were fit using Trackman, and I trust the fitter I went to immensely.  I play to a 3 handicap.

  6. Hey guys,

thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I currently have the 54 and 60 deg Vokeys in wedge flex and would like a bit more spin on the partial wedge shots. I think a regular flex would probably suit my game a bit better than the wedge flex for spin requirements. That said the feedback on Vokey wedges is faultless, Mr Vokey certainly knows what he's doing :) Will let you know how it turns out!
