Living in the Northeast, my golf swing predictably loses its form during the dormant winter months, but is also not helped by my constant tinkering. Two years ago, I could not resist a driver/wood and iron fitting at PXG during the winter, which was free with purchase of deeply discounted prior season's clubs. What I thought was a great fitting session resulted in clubs that I could not hit for my life during the spring to fall season. I spent the better part of the year adjusting my swing to fit the new clubs. The fitter admitted that his recommendations based on my swing at the time of fitting could be off if my swing changed after the fitting; he recommended that I schedule a summer fitting when I am in mid season form. It would seem to me that it would require a drastic swing change to be that off? It's confusing since the Trackman numbers seemed great during the fitting. Is this common? I am thinking about coming back to Titleist, but I'm concerned about having a similar experience. Would appreciate any feedback.

Think might be best to see a PGA teaching instructor to fine tune your swing. I have not played since October and probably will not be back on the course until March or until the doctors release me (lower back surgery) to begin swinging the clubs again. They will allow me to start with a putter then wedges working my way up to the metals over a period of weeks. I cannot jump back into hitting a full bag right a way. Has my swing changed, most definitely. It will require some fine tuning and I will go to my longtime teacher. My swing will definitely not be the same after a five month layoff.

Having a long layoff requires working your way back into the game with some assistance from a professional.

There are fitters, especially at big box stores, that are paid bonuses for making sales from certain brands of clubs. I know of some Titleist fitters who have told clients that the existing set up is good to keep. Point being, find a good fitter with a great reputation and communicate your issues. Let them know that consistency is your primary goal and they will likely help fit you into a set that will make this bad days much better. Hopefully you get into a set of Titleist clubs that you love.

That actually happened to me unfortunately. It felt like when my wife goes in for an oil change and comes home needing new brakes

At the time, the numbers looked solid and I trusted the fitter, so I ended up buying the driver, even though he was really pushing me toward a brand I wasn’t fully comfortable with. On paper it all made sense, but something just never felt right.

When I later went to the Titleist fitting centre, we went through everything again and it was night and day. The consistency improved and every number across the board got better. It finally felt dialed in. Ended up with a new Titleist driver with a better set up for my game

Too bad things like that happen, because it’s not a fun experience—but it really shows how important the right fitter is.

Could be a number of things. Don't know where you got fitted, but if someone is going to do a true fitting, it should be done outdoors and off grass. I know for some of us that is not always available, but it's still the best way to go. Check the fitter's credentials too. Many big box golf stores don't have qualified fitters, and put all the trust in the simulator, which probably hasn't had a tune up in quite some time. Also, you should never just show up and start without getting warmed up and hitting a couple dozen balls to get your groove back. If you haven't played for awhile, your swing goes dormant, so get a few rounds in prior to your scheduled fitting.

There is mention that it was a PXG fitting. I’m going to assume this was at one of the PXG fitting locations. Did the free fitting and discounted clubs provide the right amount of value?

Being in the NE US , it was most likely an indoor location. Personally, I will only get fit for a putter and maybe driver indoors. There’s the turf interaction factor missing indoors. Not to mention if I could carry a mat on course, eliminating fat shots, I could reduce my handicap by 5 or more strokes.

There is some loss of consistency when not playing for a few weeks prior to an indoor fitting. I’d still vote that getting fit off of mats is the primary culprit.

Besides using mats with possibly questionable fitters at large retailers, they are foremost merchandisers. They may have incentives to promote a brand. None of them will later work with you on course with a lesson. Nor worry about a potential sale from you in 2 years. While I do limit myself to Titleist equipment, the Premier and Titleist fitters have offered the null option if the new product doesn’t offer improvement. My choice to buy new.
  8. I was so excited to get fitted for Titleist clubs. I was lucky enough to have a friend who is a member of a club that Titleist going to be onsite. The issue was it was fairly early in the season, and the fitting was inside. I have been fit a few times, but all were done outside. Well as you would expect, the fitting did not go well. In fact, it went horribly... After hitting a few shots, I developed the shanks!! Could not believe it. The &% shanks!
The club fitter was very patient. Tried different set ups... still shanked. I even went back to my existing clubs…… and shanks continued. They were the quintessential hosel rockets. So now the fitting turned into a lesson from some of the other members standing there in amazement with my hosel rocket prowess. I was so embarrassed. Needles to say I did not get fitted for clubs that day. I played with old clubs for the entire season, albeit with post stress feeling throughout my entire body that the dreaded shanks would return... they did not. Time and tides have passed and I am thinking of scheduling another fitting but maybe waiting until I can swing without a roof over my head and walls closing in on me. Or maybe schedule some time with a golf therapist..
