I recently had an outdoor wedge fitting by a certified TItleist fitter.  I had my iron fitting at the same place earlier and really liked it. I have been trying to find out what bounce I need on wedges.  I was tired of buying wedges and then trying and then having to get new ones, so wanted a professional to look at my swing.

I was able to hit wedges off the grass and also hit off a lie board to see how the sole was interacting. I there was a launch monitor outside so I could get the proper distance/loft gapping.  Also, the fitter said I was medium bounce, if anything more of a sweeper than a picker, but the lie board was pretty much down the middle in terms of bounce. Because it has been raining a lot, the ground was soft. He recommended mid-bounce, and to go to a 54/58 configuration, which for Vokeys would be 54/11 and 58/8.

    He recommended mid-bounce 54 and mid-bounce 58, since I play mainly in Northeast Ohio. They didn't have a 54/11, so I ended up purchasing 54/14 and 58/08.

My concern was that when I was doing the fitting, I was only hitting CG16s (I guess this was the only demo wedges they had). The standard bounce on CG16s is 54/14 and 58/12. However, the standard bounce on Vokeys is 54/11 and 54/08. Since I wanted to get the Vokeys (and liked the feel of them when demoing at other occasions), and these are the standard specs, this is what he recommended.

Since I was doing the sole/turf interaction with the CG16s, should I have purchased the Vokey 58/12 instead of the 58/08? I see the 58/12 has a grind on it that will allow it to open up easily.

    I am just second-guessing the bounce I purchased. I am, wondering if I should've gone 54/11 & 58/8 instead of 54/14 & 58/08?

What do you guys think?  I guess my main confusion is that mid-bounce for one company might be high-bounce for another company.

    Thanks,

    Jake

I think you will be fine once you get the wedges.  In fact, for some of players, we throw a high bounce option in the bag just to have a choice if conditions are too soft.

We have very firm conditions at our course, but some of my members travel up north for the summer to softer conditions.  The gap wedge with lots of bounce can be a great option along with their favorite 58-60.

    Thanks for the reply.

So you are saying the 54/14 and the 58/8 should be fine?  The fitter said it would be good to have a higher bounce option and a lower bounce option. Again, I mainly play in Northeast Ohio where the ground is not usually firm, but I do have a slightly sweeper swing.

I just wasn't sure how much of a difference a 54/11 would do compared to the 54/14.

Yes, you will be fine and the 58.08 is a very cool wedge to slide through up there in Ohio!

Thanks, Ryan, I appreciate your insight and taking the time to respond to my questions.

Does anyone else have any thoughts/opinions?

Jacob, I have played tournament golf for 15 years and find this topic facinating. Tour players/Good players carry differerent wedge combinations and change for a specific setup due to two main reasons, they change the club they use for most sand shots around the green based on the sand conditions in the bunkers, this is the main reason, soft sand require more bounce. hard sand with a lot of bounce is a bigger problem than harder conditions on the fairways. The second reason they change is the chipping conditions around the greens. I carry a 53 degree with 8 and one with 11 degrees and a 58 degree with 8 and 12 degrees. My home cource have deep soft bunkers around the greens and then I carry the 53 with 8 bounce and the 58 with 12 bounce as I use the 53 mostly of fairway and some chip shots around the green. the lower bounce allow me to open the face for more loft. the 58 is for the soft deep bunkers and I can still use it of the fairway.

if I play a cource with less andy bunkers I bag the 58 with less bounce. I have played a number of cources with very big bunkers that require alot of longer bunker shots, then I select the 53 with more bounce.

  7. This is very interesting, I'm very happy that my current wedge set up covers all options.

    I play with 52.08, 60.07 and 64.07

I'm not overly concerned by the bounce but more the grind. The 52 is pretty versatile, good on full shots, low running chips  shots. The 60.07 is good in bunkers (with an open face which increases the bounce), and most other approaches. The 64.07 is great as I can really get under the ball when the ball is buried in sand or rough and when the sand and turf is firm.

I do also have a 56.11 which I can put in to play as a 5th wedge on short courses or when I need a higher bounce club.

The only thing I would prefer is to have a 60.10 but as I am left handed titleist dont currently offer it. I know I could go for the 58.08 bent to 60 but I want the wider sole of the 60.10!
