Over the weekend I was at a Titleist demo day to find a new shaft for my 910 D3 (9.5 A-1 setting).  I had a UST v2 stiff shaft that I was not hitting well and got fit in a Titleist Diamana Ahina 72g stiff.  The one thing I did not try was an X-stiff and I'm beginning to wonder if I should have gone with the extra stiff.  My swingspeed averages 108 and my launch monitor numbers with the stiff were a launch of 13.8 average and ball speed of 161 with about 2800 rpms.  I was wondering if I ordered to weak a shaft and if I went to the x-stiff would I lose/gain distance by changing the launch and spin rates?  Would I be better off to maybe tip the shaft I ordered a half inch?

  2. Hi John -

Which shaft produced the numbers you are referring to?  Want to make sure it was the Ahina.

Those are good numbers but at your ball speed you could see a nice jump in distance by bringing your spin rate down a few hundred RPM and keeping your launch close to 13.  It is possible the X might be just what takes you there.  Tipping an additional 1/2" will put you between an S and X.

One thing to watch for is your accuracy with the firmer shaft.  You might see better spin rate but you might lose some consistency if the X is too firm.  Then I would look at tipping.

You can call us and we can look for a fitting account that will have the shafts you need.

    Hope this helps...

Thanks Nick!  This was the Ahina that was producing these numbers.  I am not opposed to additional tipping, i.e. full inch, if you think that would be the best balance between tipping the stiff and moving to an x-flex.  Your thoughts?

    Nick,

I wanted to follow up on my original post.  I have been using my driver with the stiff Ahina and I'm still having difficulty.  I am hitting it super high which I didn't think would be an issue with an Ahina.  I wonder if I should tip the current shaft or move to an X-stiff.  I hit on the monitor and my launch and spin were both up a bit and my swing speed was about 114.  Thanks for the help.

When you mean "hit it high", do you mean it's spinning too much? Some people hit the ball high and still carry the ball quite well. I know how it feels when you think you've put a good move on the ball and it doesn't go anywhere. I had a similar problem with the Project X 7C3. Too much spin. I've since moved to a 910 D3 Diamana Whiteboard C-4 setting and my drives have greatly improved. The torque rating on the Whiteboard is 2.8*, which is similar to the 'Ahina X. Less spin, more carry, increased roll. I would think that the 'Ahina X would be a much better fit for your SS and you should be able to keep the ball down, which I think is what you're looking for. The X flex for the Made for Titleist Diamana shafts will play very closely to the real Diamanas.

As Jan pointed out, height is not always a bad thing.  Just make you are not well above 13 and try to keep your spin below that 2800 mark and you'll see better carry.  Still sounds like X-stiff might be a better option...but try to work with your local Titleist fitting account before investing in another shaft.

    Hi John -

Tipping gives you the option to work with your current shaft...however, tipping a full inch with your current shaft means you'll be playing with a shorter shaft.  Sounds like the X-Stiff might be your better option.

    Hey Nick

How is anyone supposed to know that the original poster is not me?

Good point John H.  When you click on your name your profile reveals the difference between the registered John H members but from this view there doesn't appear to be an easy way...I'll send a note to Mike D.

    Thanks!

    Hi John,

You have a couple of options. You can change your profile pic and upload a different image so it doesn't display the default image or you can change your screen name in your profile settings.  Here is the link to make the update:

Feel free to send me a message if you have any follow-up questions. Thanks!

Thanks for the help Nick!  I went ahead and ordered the Ahina in an x-stiff and hopefully it will arrive by the weekend.  I'm going to try and get on a launch monitor with it this weekend and let you know how it goes.
