Are Golf Balls Underrated? The One Piece of Equipment We Rarely Think About

  1. We often talk about drivers, irons, swing techniques, and even high-tech training tools—but one thing that quietly decides almost every shot is the golf ball itself. It’s interesting how something so small can have such a big impact on distance, spin, control, and feel. Some players swear by soft-feel balls for better control around the greens, while others prefer distance-focused balls that maximize power off the tee. What’s even more surprising is how much difference a “simple” ball change can make in consistency. I’ve seen players switch models and suddenly notice better control on short game shots or improved rollout on drives—without changing anything else in their swing.

It also raises a fun question: do we really choose the right golf ball for our playing style, or do most of us just stick with whatever we’re used to or find easily?

    Would love to know:

Do you play with a specific type of golf ball or just whatever is available? Have you ever noticed a real performance difference between brands? Do beginners underestimate how important the right ball selection is?

Curious to hear your experiences—sometimes the smallest piece of equipment might be doing the biggest job on the course.

    My ranking is
    1. Ball
    2. Putter
    3. Driver
For a long time I had the belief that the X was for the best players. A couple of fittings finally convinced me that higher launch (since 2017) X helps even slower swing players that can benefit from an improved launch.

I have to disagree. The one thing that quietly describes almost every shot is that blob stuck between my ears.
Golf balls are probably the cheapest tool used for every shot, so unless you already have a preferred ball, grab a few sleeves of different balls and see which one works best. For me I always go with the ProV1x. When playing for fun, sometimes I'll play 3 different balls for 6 holes as a comparison. Last week for fun I started with the AVX, then ProV1, and finished with the left dash. That particular day the left dash was amazing. Probably because it's the closest to the ProV1x.

I see that this is your first post, maybe new to the forum. If so, welcome! Titleist has done a lot the past several years to encourage players to select the best ball for them. There are on-line selection tools, virtual ball fittings, and even better, actual ball fittings by hitting wedge, 7 iron, and driver with the use of launch monitors. You will find many threads posted here by players who have selected the ball that works best for them.

I rank them them as follows:
    1. Ball (find your ball that fits you. The Left Dash fits me best)
    2. Putter (slight lines, toe hang, mallet vs blade... It's all so personal and unique)
    3. Wedges (so many grind and bounce options to fit you and to specific course conditions)
