Trying to get to an 18º or weak 18º (18.25-18.5º)

Is it better to adjust a 17º up to 18.5º or adjust a 19º down to 18.25º or does it make no difference other than lie angle and club length.

This club will fill a nice gap between my 15º 3 wood and my 21º 3 iron.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

There is a similar post floating. Here's the thought..... do you have an upright swing or a flat swing? Are you tall or average height? The stock unadjusted lie angles only differ by .25 deg. The 17 is 1/2 inch longer. The range of adjustment of loft for the 17 is 16.25-18.5 and the 19 would be 18.25 to 20.5. You could also set the 19 to 20 and chuck the 3 iron, which would give you room for another wedge (that is only 5 deg between the 910H and the 3W and ~4 deg between it and the 4 iron and you could work the gap by choking the 910H). If your objective is high ball flight, the 19 would be better (upright swing = higher ball flight). If you want to hit screamers, do the 17 (flat swing = low ball flight). Before you drop $229 on either, hit both on a launch monitor. This is me. I have a simple long game setup - driver, 3W (15), 7W (21), 5H (26). That's 15 yard gap between clubs from the 3W down to 6 iron. For in between distances, I work the clubs (remember that 1/2" of choke = 10 yd distance decrease).
  3. I have been told by rep's that when you adjust the loft of a club down you are opening the face and when you are increasing the loft you are effectively closing the face...this information may make a difference in the outcomes of your shots (or maybe not)...

I prefer to only dial up my effective loft as a result for my swing...

    Just a thought...

Yes...increasing/decreasing loft and opening/closing the face angle will make a difference in your shots.

I have a bit of a mad-scientist project with a TM Rescue TP 2009 2/17 with Flight Control Technology. I picked it up dirt cheap ($55) used. I had them set it 1* more loft (which closes the face a little bit). Also shortened the shaft to 40" and put a lighter grip on it (Excel RF Midsize) so it swings like a persimmon 10 wood I have in my spares bag (they both have the same lie angle). So far so good. The principle is the same - do you take a more lofted club and lower it or take a less lofted club and raise it. If you have a fade to begin with, lowering the loft would exaggerate it and raising the loft would reduce it.

It works OK, however, my trusty ole 7 wood (21 deg) just smokes it! Setting the loft to 18 on a 17 deg club reduces a fade and it goes pretty straight or with a slight draw; however, I get about 5-10 more yards out of my 7 wood.

Lou, Do you know if you can change the lie angle without changing the loft? In about 3 hours I going to purchase the 17 and 21 if it is possiple to upright them 1 degree.

Couldn't really speak with authority on the lie angle because the club I had was a TM 2009 Rescue TP and it only adjusted loft.   What I can tell you is that uprighting the club will correct a fade.

    Brandon,

One thing to keep in mind is how you like to see the club face at address.  If you get the 17* and move it to 18.5*, then the club face will be 1.5* closed.  If you get the 19* and adjust it to 18.25*, then you will have the face angle at 1.5* open.

These esthetic looks are important to mention to the fitter as you are getting fit.

So would you flat the 17 to compensate for the closed clubface and upright the 19 to compensate for the open clubface? Just a question in the event I may get a 27H when it comes out.

    Is that right, seems backwards.

If I take a standard club and open the face, I add loft. If I close the face I deloft .

It just seems backwards to add loft and close the face.
