Titleist 712 irons

    HI

     

    I am a 10 handicap and I am looking to get new irons.  I am deciding between ap2s and mbs.  I know most people would say with my handicap to get the ap2s and  I would be crazy to get mbs.  However I have played and hit range balls with blades before and find that the minor mishits for me personally between cavity backs and blades have subtle difference in trajectory and distance.  I like the looks of the mbs better and feel the workability is superior.  My friend who is a 3 handicap has a set of 710 mbs and started playing them when he was a 25 handicapper.  Just like for me, many people called him crazy for playing them with such a high handicap but he swears they are the reason that he has the handicap he has because they taught him quickly to not mishit the ball.  He encourages me to get the blades even though I have only been playing for a year and a half because he feels at the rate I am improving I will have lower than a 5 handicap at the end of this next year as I practice everyday, even in the winter.  On the other hand even pros play the ap2s and a few pros at my club play them and swear by them.  I am leaning towards the mbs. What do you think?

    Any of our iron models can be played by any handicap, but the player will want to be sure that the iron performs to the best of it's ability (consistency, distance control, workability).  If you feel you can work the ball as needed, your distance control and consistency is good with the MBs, then that may very well be the iron for you.

    I'm not sure if you have hit or seen the new AP2's, but with the reshaped top-line, new square toe profile, and slimmer sole width, it is a much more appealing iron (for the player who likes the blade look).  It is one of the most popular irons on tour, because it offers great workability and any slight miss hit will perform that much better due to the higher MOI.  

    Either iron can help you lower your handicap, but you'll ultimately want consistency to be the deciding factor.  Hope this helps!

    I have not yet hit the AP2s but I have heard before that they are similar to blades just as you said.  However, they are still cavity backs.  The difference for me between cavity backs and blades is large.  On large mishits for both clubs the result is the same.  On small mishits, sure the cavity backed ap2s will be better.  But for some reason I find that I always hit blades straight.  With cavity backs I sometimes hit unintentional fades or draws but with blades its always straight.  I don't understand it too well, but that is what happens.

    Hey Dan, do yourself a huge favor and find a Titleist fitter. Have a fitting and see what an independant expert has to say about which club suits you best. The fitter will have the experience to guide you to the right club for you.

    Yes I Definitely will be getting fit at golf galaxy. I know they have great technology to get a great fit but they would fit me for my current swing. I am definitely going to keep improving with the amount I practice (and I still need a few swing corrections)so the question is do I risk the mb's. I'm thinking yes at the moment. However my instructor reccomended the ap2's for me, but that may be a little biased since he likes them so much that he's sponsored by taylormade but went out and got himself a set of ap2's and sm4s to play with instead of his taylormade clubs he gets for free. I told him he made the right decision playing titleist

    I'm in the same boat. I recently bought the new 712 mb's because of the way they look and feel. I just can't get over the extra offset on the more forgiving clubs. Since buying them i took an oppurtunity to play a set of ap-2's and have to say that I don't regret getting the mb's at all. I love them even though they are more difficult to play. If i made any changes it would be to order a mixed set and add a 4 and possibly a 5 iron from the ap-2 set and leave the rest mb's. Now that titleist will allow you to customize an order and mix any irons the way you want you just can't go wrong. Good Luck

    Your friend went from a 25 to a 3 in less than 2 years?  I would love to know his secret.

    Yes I was quite surprised myself when I met him. But he truly does practice a ton and we take lessons together so we are able to help each other improve, knowing what our pro wants each of us to work on

    Hi Dan i think you really need to get custom fit at a titleist center as i did 4 weeks ago.,i hit the full range of 2012 irons and was fitted with ap2's DG S300 SL shafts 1 degree stronger,standard lie plus 3/4 inch and midsize grips. i would never buy without getting the experts advice as i would never have guessed my specs.
